THE LOWDOWN
WEST HAM
It was an extremely impressive display in midweek by the reigning UEFA Europa Conference League winners as West Ham United emphatically overturned their first-leg deficit against Freiburg as they thrashed the Germans by five goals to nil in the second-leg of their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie with a stellar performance from Ghanaian international Mohammed Kudus.
The Hammers started the calendar year of 2024 but David Moyes’ men have now suffered just one loss in their last five matches across all competitions. They have moved into the top seven and the European spots in the Premier League ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures, despite the pressure that Moyes is under from supporters.
ASTON VILLA
Much like West Ham, Aston Villa also enjoyed an emphatic hammering in the second-leg of a European competition in midweek. The Villains, aiming to take West Ham’s UEFA Europa Conference League crown this season, defeated Dutch giants Ajax by four goals to nil at Villa Park on Thursday evening.
The visitors have been really impressive domestically as they begin the weekend sitting in the top four but Tottenham Hotspur could leapfrog them into fourth place if they defeat Fulham on Saturday evening at Craven Cottage. Villa were hammered 4-0 by Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, though, so do need a reaction domestically, too.
THE TEAM NEWS
WEST HAM
David Moyes has confirmed that Ivory Coast international attacker Maxwel Cornet will miss this weekend's clash with Aston Villa.
The Scotsman has also said a 'late call' will have to be made on left-back Emerson Palmieri as he is suffering with a 'groin strain'. Those two are their only reported injury concerns, though.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Coufal, Mavropanos, Zouma, Cresswell; Soucek, Alvarez; Paqueta, Ward-Prowse, Kudus; Bowen
UNAVAILABLE: Cornet (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Emerson (Injured)
ASTON VILLA
Emi Buendia, who had actually been anticipated to miss the rest of this season, will be unavailable for this weekend but he has returned to the grass as he continues his rehabilitation.
The visitors may well be without key forward Ollie Watkins after he went off with a facial cut against Ajax on Thursday but Unai Emery has said 'hopefully for Sunday, he is going to be available.'
PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Pau Torres, Digne; Bailey, Douglas Luiz, Tielemans, Rogers; Diaby, Jhon Duran
UNAVAILABLE: Mings (Injured), Carlos (Injured), Kamara (Injured), McGinn (Suspended), Buendia (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Ramsey (Injured), Watkins (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
These two both come into this on the back of similar victories in midweek that may well have taken it out of their respective squads as they try and set themselves up for a potentially historic and famous final couple of months when we return from the March international break. For now, though, they both need one last push to try and achieve their respective goals of a top seven or top four finish and we should have a really fun match for the neutral with two teams that have combined for 104 goals scored so far this season.
