THE LOWDOWN

SOUTHAMPTON

Southampton were already relegated by the time they faced Brighton last Sunday, but there was no change is result or performance as they lost their fifth consecutive game when they fell 3-1 to Brighton. The Saints are now winless in their last 12 games as they head into their final game of the season.

A first-half brace from rising star Evan Ferguson put the Seagulls in front, and although a Mohamed Elyounoussi header offered hope of a comeback after the break, that was snuffed out when Pascal Gross restored Brighton's two-goal lead a little over ten minutes later. It was a 25th Premier League defeat of the season for Southampton, who will be returning to the Championship for the first time since the 2011/12 season.

LIVERPOOL

Liverpool's late charge for a top-four place has finally come to an end as their 1-1 draw with Aston Villa - coupled with results elsewhere not going their way - confirmed that there would be no Champions League football for Jurgen Klopp's side next season.

The Reds really needed to win their last two games of the season to stand any chance of surpassing one of Man Utd or Newcastle, but Aston Villa - vastly improved since Unai Emery took charge of the midlands club - made life difficult. Jacob Ramsey put Villa in front just before the half-hour mark, and Liverpool struggled to break down their opponents' rearguard until the 89th minute, when the departing Roberto Firmino levelled matters. It was too little, too late though, and it will be Europa League football for Klopp's side next season.

THE TEAM NEWS

SOUTHAMPTON

Paul Onuahu is a doubt for the final game of the season and it seems almost certain that fellow forward Che Adams will miss out, so Joe Aribo is poised to lead the line once again for the Saints.

Ruben Selles gave runouts to youngsters Dom Ballard and Kamari Doyle against Brighton and they could receive more minutes here, while full-back Tino Livramento made his long-awaited return off the substitutes bench last weekend and Selles has stated that the same will be the case against Liverpool. Meanwhile, Mohammed Salisu, Armel Bella-Kotchap, Romain Perraud and Juan Larios are the confirmed absentees in the Saints camp.

PREDICTED XI (4-1-4-1): McCarthy; Bree, Bednarek, Lyanco, Walker-Peters; Lavia; Walcott, Ward-Prowse, S. Armstrong, Elyounoussi; Aribo

UNAVAILABLE: Salisu (Injured), Bella-Kotchap (Injured), Perraud (Injured), Larios (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Onuachu (Injured), Adams (Injured)

LIVERPOOL

With Liverpool destined to finished fifth regardless of results on the final day, Jurgen Klopp has unsurprisingly hinted at making a few changes to the starting XI. The likes of Fabio Carvalho could be given an opportunity to shine, while Darwin Nunez looks a likely starter after a recent return to training. For the sentimentals out there, Roberto Firmino may well be handed a start on what will be his final appearance for the club.

Injury and illness may force Klopp's hand in other areas. Ibrahima Konate has been unwell and could miss out, while Andy Robertson is carrying a niggle and does not need to be risked. Joel Matip and Kostas Tsimikas are ready-made replacements for those two, while other rotations will also be considered.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Jones, Fabinho, Elliott; Carvalho, Firmino, Nunez

UNAVAILABLE: Ramsay (Injured), Bajcetic (Injured), Thiago (Injured), Ramsey (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Konate (Illness), Robertson (Injured), Keita (Injured), Nunez (Fitness)

THE PREDICTION

This one is difficult to call given that there is essentially nothing on the line here, so it may be one to look towards the goalscorer markets. For those that love a narrative, it would not be surprising to see Liverpool do all they can to get Reds legend Roberto Firmino on the scoresheet on what will be his final game for the club. The Brazilian will likely receive plenty of minutes on his Liverpool swansong, so backing him to find the net could be worthwhile.

TIP: ROBERTO FIRMINO TO SCORE ANYTIME
