THE LOWDOWN
SHEFFIELD UTD
It has been a truly miserable campaign for Sheffield United. Even with points deductions seemingly remaining likely for both Everton and Nottingham Forest, it won’t make it that interesting for United as they sit adrift at the bottom-of-the-table with relegation a case of when and not if as they drift to a return to the second-tier.
They were beaten by a goal to nil at Molineux against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend, with a 30th minute winning goal scored by Pablo Sarabia. Sheffield United now begin the match day sitting 11 points adrift of safety, having conceded 66 goals in their 26 matches so far this season, including five in each of their last three home games in all competitions.
ARSENAL
Arsenal have been in magnificent form in the Premier League of late and that continued last weekend as they hammered Newcastle United by four goals to one at the Emirates Stadium. A Sven Botman own goal was followed by goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Jakub Kiwior to give Mikel Arteta’s side a 4-0 lead with just over five minutes of the game to go before Joe Willock scored a consolation against his former club.
The north Londoners have now managed six victories out of six in the Premier League in the calendar year of 2024. In those six wins, where they have beaten Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, West Ham United and Burnley as well as Newcastle, they have scored an astonishing 25 goals.
THE TEAM NEWS
SHEFFIELD UTD
Chris Wilder has confirmed that January signing, Ben Brereton Diaz, who had found some form before his injury, returned to training this week, alongside Greek international, George Baldock.
The Blades, though, will be without Mason Holgate due to suspension, as well as the likes of Max Lowe, Chris Basham and John Egan due to injury with Cameron Archer also a doubt.
PREDICTED XI (3-5-1-1): Grbic; Ahmedhodzic, Trusty, Robinson; Baldock, Vinicius Souza, Norwood, Hamer, Larouci; McAtee; Brewster
UNAVAILABLE: Egan (Injured), Basham (Injured), Holgate (Suspended), Lowe (Injured), Norrington-Davies (Injured), Jebbison (Illness)
QUESTIONABLE: Archer (Injured)
ARSENAL
Ghanaian international midfielder Thomas Partey returned to training on Monday and he could be available for this weekend’s trip to Bramall Lane.
The Gunners may also be with the likes of Takehiro Tomiyasu and Oleksandr Zinchenko and they are both ‘possible’ but will have to be assessed over the weekend.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): David Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Kiwior; Odegaard, Jorginho, Rice; Saka, Havertz, Martinelli
UNAVAILABLE: Timber (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Tomiyasu (Injured), Zinchenko (Injured), Partey (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
Sheffield United’s last three matches at Bramall Lane have seen them lose 5-2 to Brighton in the FA Cup, 5-0 to Aston Villa in the league and then 5-0 again against Brighton in the league. They are an extremely poor team and now come up against a free-scoring Arsenal side that, if they hit anywhere near the level they have in recent times, should run up a score for themselves in South Yorkshire as the title race could well come down to goal difference, too.
TIP: ARSENAL TO WIN -1 HANDICAP
