THE LOWDOWN
NOTTINGHAM FOREST
Following the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo, performances have immediately improved at Nottingham Forest with a win and a defeat in his opening two matches over the festive period. That loss, though, came with mitigating circumstances as they suffered a 3-2 defeat at home to Bournemouth with Willy Boly sent off in just the 23rd minute of the match.
They suffered a 94th-minute winning goal to Dominic Solanke in that game before following that up with an extremely impressive performance at St James’ Park on Boxing Day. The Reds came from a goal down to defeat The Magpies by three goals to one as former Newcastle striker Chris Wood notched an excellent hat-trick.
MAN UTD
Erik ten Hag got a little bit of respite on Boxing Day as his Man Utd side came from two goals down to defeat title-challenging Aston Villa by three goals to two in dramatic fashion at Old Trafford. United had collected just a point in their previous three matches before that much-needed victory.
United have managed just ten victories in their 19 league matches so far this season as they battle to keep their spot in the top seven. That dramatic turnaround against Villa has prevented them from the ignominy of potentially falling into the bottom half this weekend and beginning the New Year below the likes of Wolves and Bournemouth.
THE TEAM NEWS
NOTTINGHAM FOREST
Taiwo Awoniyi has been the key absentee for Nottingham Forest and The Reds will remain without the Nigeria striker, who is unavailable until at least mid-March. They will be able to welcome back Willy Boly from suspension, though.
Nuno Espirito Santo is without Ibrahim Sangare through suspension, while defensive duo Felipe and Serge Aurier will be unavailable due to injuries.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Turner; Montiel, Boly, Murillo, Toffolo; Yates, Danilo; Elanga, Gibbs-White, Hudson-Odoi; Wood
UNAVAILABLE: Felipe (Injured), Aurier (Injured), Sangare (Suspended), Awoniyi (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
MAN UTD
Man Utd remain without some key defenders for this weekend’s trip south to the City Ground as the likes of Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez are still unavailable, but both are nearing returns in early 2024.
Erik ten Hag will also have to continue to contend with the absences of Casemiro, Mason Mount, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire – albeit all four are getting close to coming back. Amad Diallo, Anthony Martial, Sofyan Amrabat and Luke Shaw are all doubts.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Onana; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Evans, Dalot; Mainoo, Eriksen; Garnacho, Fernandes, Rashford; Hojlund
UNAVAILABLE: Maguire (Injured), Martinez (Injured), Lindelof (Injured), Malacia (Injured), Casemiro (Injured), Mount (Injured), Sancho (Disciplinary)
QUESTIONABLE: Shaw (Injured), Amrabat (Injured), Diallo (Injured), Martial (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
Nuno Espirito Santo was an appointment that had brought about a little bit of scepticism but they have immediately started with some intensity that has brought about three surprising points already. They now welcome a Man Utd side that have managed to weather several storms this season but remain in what many would describe as a ‘crisis’. Nuno’s style is known for being pragmatic, whilst only three teams have scored fewer than Man Utd in the Premier League this season heading into the weekend. As a result, a low-scoring encounter is to be expected on Saturday evening.
