In recent seasons, Newcastle United have handed a couple of hammerings to Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park and now the Magpies will be hoping their season clicks into gear with another visit of Spurs to the north east this weekend.

NEWCASTLE PREVIEW: SLOW-ISH START

After a quiet summer transfer window, Newcastle United have had a fairly strong but quiet start to the 2024/25 season. The Magpies have ticked boxes with a home win, away draw and then progression in the EFL Cup but there is probably more to the story than that for Eddie Howe and his side.

They began the campaign by edging past newly-promoted Southampton by a goal to nil at St James’ Park after being down to ten men for over an hour. They were then quite fortunate to get a point away at AFC Bournemouth, where they lost last season, before then edging past Nottingham Forest on penalties in the second round of the EFL Cup in midweek.

TOTTENHAM PREVIEW: THE FLUENCY WAS FOUND

Ange Postecoglou has stated that his second season is when he ‘usually wins things’ and after piling that pressure on himself, Tottenham Hotspur began the season in underwhelming fashion with a 1-1 draw away to newly-promoted Leicester City on the opening weekend of the season in which they were the dominant side.

After that, Spurs put in an excellent and fluid performance against already in crisis Everton as they hammered the Toffees by four goals to nil with a brace from Son Heung-min as well as goals from the returning Yves Bissouma as well as one from Argentina international centre-back Cristian Romero.

NEWCASTLE TEAM NEWS: POTENTIAL GOOD NEWS ON WILLOCK

After picking up yet another injury, Joe Willock appears to have avoided a serious concern according to Eddie Howe but the former Arsenal midfielder will still need another scan.

The Magpies remain without Fabian Schar, who is suspended, as well as the likes of Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Lewis Miley and Callum Wilson but Sandro Tonali did return from his suspension in the cup in midweek.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Pope; Livramento, Krafth, Burn, Kelly; Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton; Murphy, Isak, Gordon

UNAVAILABLE: Botman (Injured), Lascelles (Injured), Schar (Suspended), Miley (Injured), Willock (Injured), Wilson (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS: SOLANKE SETBACK

There was a hope that Dominic Solanke could fall into the 'doubtful' category for this weekend but the English striker is instead aiming to return after the September international break.

It has also been suggested that Richarlison will now be absent for a 'few weeks', too, so the likelihood is that Spurs will play with their innovative 4-3-3 again involving Dejan Kulusevski in the midfield.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Vicario; Pedro Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Kulusevski, Bissouma, Maddison; Johnson, Son, Odobert

UNAVAILABLE: Solanke (Injured), Richarlison (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Van de Ven (Injured), Udogie (Injured), Rodrigo Bentancur (Injured)

NEWCASTLE VS TOTTENHAM PREDICTION

The most famous of Newcastle’s defeats of Tottenham in recent years came in 2023 when the Magpies were 5-0 up inside 20 minutes and eventually ended up as 6-1 winners. Newcastle have started strongly and there will, as ever, likely be a loud and hostile atmosphere up at St James’. Spurs showed a cutting edge last weekend, albeit against poor opposition, so we may end up with quite a fun game for the neutral.
