THE LOWDOWN

NEWCASTLE

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United have been ‘the entertainers’ in what has been an unusually high-scoring Premier League season so far with their 31 matches in the 2023/24 campaign consisting of 117 goals. Only four teams have scored more than the Magpies this year but only six have conceded more, too.

The hosts are firmly in the battle for European qualification with the expectation still being that the top eight will be enough to achieve UEFA Europa Conference League football in the Premier League. They earned a vital 1-0 win over Fulham in that respect last weekend at Craven Cottage with Bruno Guimaraes scoring an 81st minute winner.

TOTTENHAM

Ange Postecoglou will be a little concerned about the fact both Arsenal and Manchester City failed to win the first-legs of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final ties in midweek. If England, as is and was expected, perform as one of the best two leagues in UEFA competition this season then fifth place in the Premier League will be given a UEFA Champions League spot.

That is of interest to Tottenham Hotspur because they are in a real battle with Aston Villa for fourth in the league. Spurs begin this weekend sitting just above the Villains on goal difference as they took advantage of Villa dropping points at home to Brentford by comfortably defeating Nottingham Forest by three goals to one at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

THE TEAM NEWS

NEWCASTLE

Eddie Howe has been dealing with an injury ravaged squad throughout this campaign and that has been added to with midfielder Joe Willock seeing an Achilles specialist and he is a major doubt.

The Magpies have an injury list that is in double figures and former Southampton defender Tino Livramento closest to returning but Lewis Hall is also now a doubt after not training all week.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Dubravka; Krafth, Schar, Burn, Hall; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Anderson; Barnes, Isak, Gordon

UNAVAILABLE: Pope (Injured), Botman (Injured), Lascelles (Injured), Trippier (Injured), Livramento (Injured), Targett (Injured), Miley (Injured), Joelinton (Injured), Tonali (Suspended), Almiron (Injured), Wilson (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Hall (Injured), Willock (Injured)

TOTTENHAM

Ange Postecoglou has had to confirm that his Brazilian international striker, Richarlison, will be unavailable for this weekend as he is suffering from a knee issue.

Fraser Forster, Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon are all also still unavailable but, asides from those four, everyone is ready to go for Tottenham this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Bentancur; Kulusevski, Maddison, Werner; Son

UNAVAILABLE: Forster (Injured), Sessegnon (Injured), Solomon (Injured), Richarlison (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Last season in this fixture, Newcastle raced into a 5-0 lead inside 20 minutes at St James’ Park and Eddie Howe will certainly be pressurising his players into another fast start against a Spurs side that can be susceptible at the back. Postecoglou’s side have kept just two clean sheets in their last 16 matches across all competitions. Newcastle, though, are defensively weaker if anything, and also have major injury issues, so both teams scoring would appear a good bet for this one.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
