THE LOWDOWN

Southampton suffered a setback after losing to Bournemouth in midweek, and they find themselves six points adrift of safety as they head to St James' Park to face Newcastle United on Sunday. Newcastle, on the other hand, are in the opposite situation, sitting in third place and all but guaranteeing themselves Champions League football.

After their 6-1 win over Tottenham last weekend, Steve Bruce's men had an easy time of it against Everton on Thursday, with Callum Wilson netting twice in the 4-1 win at Goodison Park.

The Magpies are now on a run of seven wins in eight Premier League matches, with Alexander Isak coming off the bench to score yet again, while Joelinton and Jacob Murphy both scored for the second game running. They have only lost four of their 32 league matches this season, with the best defensive record in the league, having conceded just 26 goals, although they have only managed two clean sheets in their last 12 league games.

Southampton's woes continued with their midweek defeat to Bournemouth, with their late equalizer being ruled out for offside. While they managed to salvage a 3-3 draw against Arsenal in their previous outing, they have only managed three points from their last eight games.

Ruben Selles's side are now six points from safety and need to perform a minor miracle if they want to avoid relegation. With only three wins from their last 22 league games, the Saints are expected to struggle in front of the passionate Toon Army.

THE PREDICTION

Newcastle and Southampton come into this fixture in vastly different shape with the former having made a huge step towards Champions League football next season, while Southampton are on the brink of playing Championship football in the next campaign. Eddie Howe is getting the best out of his men at the moment, regardless of which XI he is going with, and given the firepower he possesses up front, a Newcastle victory in a match containing over 2.5 goals is the prediction.
