THE LOWDOWN

NEWCASTLE

Newcastle have been touted by some as title challengers this season but last week's defeat to Man City showed that they are still a step behind the champions.

Eddie Howe's men competed well with Pep Guardiola's treble winners, especially in midfield, but a lack of cutting edge in the final third prevented them from really threatening Ederson's goal and they ultimately fell behind to a Julian Alvarez strike. Nevertheless, the Magpies have impressed enough in the early weeks to show that they business once more this season.

LIVERPOOL

Liverpool's attacking stars were in fine form last week as they followed their 1-1 draw with Chelsea on the opening weekend with a deserved 3-1 win over Bournemouth.

The Reds got off to a disastrous start when a defensive mix-up let Antoine Semenyo in to give the Cherries an early lead, but Liverpool took control of the game thereafter. Luis Diaz's acrobatic effort restored parity before Mo Salah guided the ball home after his initial penalty had been saved. Bournemouth were given a lifeline when Alexis Mac Allister was dismissed just before the hour mark, but Diogo Jota made sure of the result not long after.

THE TEAM NEWS

NEWCASTLE

New signing Lewis Hall is available but is unlikely to be selected straight away as he needs time to adapt to his new team, while Joelinton - who picked up a knock last week - has returned to training and should be fine to participate.

In the attacking areas, Howe does have options should he wish to rotate with Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson chomping at the bit, although it could well be an unchanged XI for the third game in succession.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Pope, Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn; Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Isak, Gordon

UNAVAILABLE: Krafth (Injured), Willock (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Manquillo (Fitness), Hall (Fitness), Joelinton (Injured)

LIVERPOOL

Alexis Mac Allister has had his red card overturned so he is available for this one, while Klopp may consider bringing Cody Gakpo out of the midfield after two rather ineffective performances from the Dutchman. Harvey Elliott, new signing Wataru Endo or fit-again Stefan Bajcetic are all options Klopp could turn to, but Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones won't return to training until Monday. The front three are likely to be unchanged after all getting on the scoresheet against Bournemouth, although Darwin Nunez is waiting in the wings for his first start of the season.

Ibrahima Konate has emerged as a doubt so Joel Matip could deputise in central defence, but Trent Alexander-Arnold has been passed fit after a minor knock.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Bajcetic; Salah, Jota, Diaz

UNAVAILABLE: Jones (Injured), Thiago (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Konate (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This weekend sees one of the most historical fixtures in the Premier League take place with Newcastle and Liverpool having contested plenty of classic encounters over the years. In recent times though, Newcastle have struggled in this fixture and you have to go all the way back to December 2015 to find the last time they got the better of the two. This is perhaps as good a time as any for them to break that duck, but they know they are coming up against a fearsome attack. The script is there for Mo Salah to get on the scoresheet here, given the speculation surrounding a potential move to the Saudi Pro League this week.

TIP: MO SALAH TO SCORE ANYTIME
