THE LOWDOWN

NEWCASTLE

  • Newcastle have hit their first real sticky patch of the season with their 1-1 draw with Bournemouth making it five draws from their last six Premier League encounters.
  • Joe Willock has a hamstring complaint and will be checked although Howe admitted it was very minor, while there will be a late call on Callum Wilson’s involvement after the English striker missed out against Bournemouth with a thigh injury.

LIVERPOOL

  • Jurgen Klopp will hope that the Merseyside Derby victory over Everton on Monday can act as a catalyst for sustained improvement, with the Reds still maintaining some hope they can go on a run and finish in the top four.
  • Virgil van Dijk could start after making the bench against Everton while Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota are in the running after bench appearances against the Toffees, although Klopp may stick with a front three of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo.

THE PREDICTION

Newcastle’s only defeat of the Premier League season to date remains the August meeting between these two sides at Anfield, with a last-gasp Fabio Carvalho goal stealing the points for the Merseyside club. Since then, Newcastle have generally gone from strength to strength although there have been far too many draws of late for Eddie Howe’s liking. Revenge will be on their minds but they are simply not scoring enough right now with just three goals scored in their last six Premier League games. Liverpool, on the other hand, showed some promising signs in their win over Everton last time out, but they remain a side still searching for fluidity so don’t be surprised if this is another low-scoring encounter featuring under 2.5 goals.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
