THE LOWDOWN

NEWCASTLE

  • Newcastle rode their luck last weekend away at Crystal Palace, but managed to hold out for a 1-1 draw in Graeme Jones’ first match as interim boss, whilst the Magpies’ new ownership seek a new long-term manager.
  • The injury list of Newcastle is getting smaller and Jones will be further boosted by the availability of Jonjo Shelvey for the visit of Chelsea following suspension.

CHELSEA

  • Without a senior striker on the pitch against Norwich last Saturday, Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea made an emphatic statement at Stamford Bridge regarding their attacking credentials, thrashing the woeful Canaries 7-0.
  • Both forwards Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner are expected to miss out once again here alongside midfielder Mateo Kovacic who has suffered a hamstring injury, although Tuchel is likely to have key defenders Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta available here, despite Christensen recovering from tooth surgery and skipper Azpilicueta injuring a shoulder in training.

THE PREDICTION

Newcastle fans at St. James’ Park will make this a very uncomfortable environment for Chelsea, giving the home side every ounce of support that they can muster vocally and despite their woeful league campaign that has seen them yet to win this season, Newcastle will give everything for the cause here for those supporters. However, Chelsea don’t come into this latest round of Premier League fixtures top of the table by fluke. The Blues have combined defensive stability with attacking potency admirably this season and boast seven wins from their opening nine league matches. The quality of Chelsea is expected to shine through here and the visitors have to be favoured for the three points and what should prove a far tougher challenge for Chelsea than what Norwich provided last weekend.

Tip: CHELSEA TO WIN
