THE LOWDOWN
NEWCASTLE
The defeat to Brighton a fortnight ago marked Newcastle's third straight Premier League defeat - the first time that has happened in a year-and-a-half - and that will be of some concern to Eddie Howe given that Champions League football hasn't kicked in yet.
The Magpies were second best to Brighton and struggled to contain Evan Ferguson, who helped himself to a hat-trick. Callum Wilson's injury-time consolation reduced the arrears, but the damage was already done by that point.
BRENTFORD
Brentford's late draw against Bournemouth prior to the international break preserved their unbeaten start to the Premier League, and they go into the weekend's fixture positioned in the top half of the table.
Mathais Jensen gave the Bees an early lead in the clash with the Cherries, only for Dominic Solanke to draw Bournemouth level on the half-hour mark. A defensive mix-up then allowed David Brooks to score and threaten a Bournemouth victory, but Bryan Mbeumo found the net in stoppage time to recuse a point for Thomas Frank's men.
THE TEAM NEWS
NEWCASTLE
Sven Botman is back in training and has a strong chance of coming back into central defence, which would likely mean Dan Burn reverting to left-back at the expense of Matt Targett. In midfield, Sandro Tonali is carrying a minor injury and could miss out as a precaution, with Elliot Anderson likely to fill in should he overcome his own knock.
In the attacking areas, Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson - who has recently signed a new deal at the club - are pushing for starts.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Pope, Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn; Anderson, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Isak, Gordon
UNAVAILABLE: Krafth (Injured), Willock (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Botman (Injured), Lascelles (Personal reasons), Manquillo (Fitness), Anderson (Injured), Tonali (Injured)
BRENTFORD
An adductor injury has kept Mikel Damsgaard out of the last two games but the Dane has a chance of making the squad here should he pass a late fitness test.
Elsewhere, Josh Dasilva and Shandon Baptiste remain out, while Thomas Frank will be reluctant to change his side although new loan signing Neal Maupay is available for selection.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Flekken; Hickey, Pinnock, Mee, Henry; Jensen, Norgaard, Janelt; Mbeumo, Wissa, Schade
UNAVAILABLE: Dasilva (Injured), Baptiste (Injured), Toney (Suspended)
QUESTIONABLE: Damsgaard (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
With Champions League football imminent, Newcastle need to start picking up points in the Premier League but they will find Brentford - still unbeaten this season - to be stubborn opponents. Goals at both ends look very possible here, with Newcastle having conceded in all four games this season, while Brentford have kept just one clean sheet in five competitive encounters. With these factors in mind, both teams to score is the tip at St. James' Park.
TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
