THE LOWDOWN
MAN UTD
Manchester United are not very good, their performance level has slightly improved, they are scraping by teams they should comfortably beat and yet The Red Devils have a really chance of earning UEFA Champions League qualification this season; especially if, as is expected, it is to be the top five who qualify for the competition next season from the Premier League.
They come into this one on the back of holding on to a 2-1 win at Kenilworth Road against Luton Town with Rasmus Hojlund scoring a brace inside seven minutes. They have now enjoyed five successive victories across all competitions and remain unbeaten in the calendar year of 2024, closing the gap on Tottenham Hotspur in fifth.
FULHAM
There might be a hint of frustrating from Marco Silva after his Fulham side suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Aston Villa last weekend. Ollie Watkins scored a brace in that match with goals in either half and, despite the fact Rodrigo Muniz notched his fourth goal in three matches for The Cottagers, that was enough to condemn them to defeat.
They suffered through a difficult January transfer window in which there were no arrivals, despite the fact that there was some typically late activity in terms of discussions or moves for players late on. That, combined with the fact they were knocked out of both the FA Cup and EFL Cup late on in the month has left the situation feeling a bit ‘boring’ for want of a better phrase at Craven Cottage.
THE TEAM NEWS
MAN UTD
In a major blow to Utd's attack, in-form striker Rasmus Hojlund has been ruled out for "two to three weeks" with an unspecified muscle injury, and with Anthony Martial also sidelined, Marcus Rashford may be required to lead the line.
Luke Shaw suffered an injury against Luton and could miss the rest of the campaign.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Onana; Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Lindelof; Mainoo, Casemiro; Antony, Fernandes, Garnacho; Rashford
UNAVAILABLE: Martinez (Injured), Wan-Bissaka (Injured), Malacia (Injured), Shaw (Injured), Mount (Injured), Martial (Injured), Hojlund (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
FULHAM
Marco Silva has a few injury and availability issues for this weekend's trip to Manchester. Key man Joao Palhinha will be missing for the next two matches due to suspension.
The Cottagers could also be without Willian, who faces a late fitness test. Mexican international striker Raul Jimenez remains the only definite injury absentee, whilst Armando Broja should return to the squad after a bout of illness.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Castagne, Adarabioyo, Bassey, Robinson; Reed, Cairney; Wilson, Pereira, Willian; Muniz
UNAVAILABLE: Palhinha (Suspended), Jimenez (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Willian (Injured), Broja (Illness)
THE PREDICTION
In 35 matches across all competitions so far this season, Manchester United have won just five games by more than a solitary goal: League One Wigan Athletic, League Two Newport County, a heavily rotated Crystal Palace side in the EFL Cup and comfortable, albeit flattering, victories over Everton and West Ham in the Premier League. They have defied general logic this season to continue winning so will probably do so again here but Fulham, especially with the way that they play on the front foot, will fancy their chances of at least scoring at Old Trafford.
TIP: MAN UTD TO WIN & BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
