THE LOWDOWN

MAN CITY

Manchester City were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the weekend with Rodri rescuing a point for the defending champions with a late strike. City performed well in the second-half but will actually count themselves fairly fortunate to have not been more than a goal down as they headed into half-time.

Prior to that draw, City had enjoyed an 11-match winning streak across all competitions, which had put them back into a position where the Premier League title was in their own hands. Whilst City are obviously playing better than they were in the late autumn, there is still something seemingly missing in terms of their fluency in attack.

BRENTFORD

Thomas Frank was left frustrated by Liverpool’s sheer efficiency on Saturday, stating that it was the first time they had conceded on the counter-attack in over two years as The Reds ran out 4-1 winners at the Gtech Community Stadium. Despite the scoreline, it was yet another improved performance from The Bees.

The return of Ivan Toney from suspension, who has now scored four goals in five games, combined with the signing of Sergio Reguilon and other players, such as Ben Mee and Christian Norgaard, returning from injury has helped Brentford pick up a couple of victories in the last month and they will be confident of easing themselves away from the bottom three.

THE TEAM NEWS

MAN CITY

The extent of the injury that Jack Grealish suffered against Copenhagen remains unclear as of yet but the England international, who missed the game with Chelsea on Saturday, is expected to remain sidelined.

Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol is also not expected to return for a couple of weeks so he will be unavailable for this one, whilst the likes of Sergio Gomez and Mateo Kovacic returned and will be available for City.

PREDICTED XI (4-1-4-1): Ederson; Walker, Stones, Dias, Ake; Rodri; Foden, De Bruyne, Alvarez, Doku; Haaland

UNAVAILABLE: Gvardiol (Injured), Grealish (Injured)

BRENTFORD

In his post-match press conference after on Saturday, Thomas Frank confirmed that defender Ethan Pinnock would miss at least the next month with the former Barnsley man not expected to return until ‘after the international break’.

Frank is also still without key players such as Aaron Hickey, Rico Henry and Bryan Mbeumo, who remain sidelined through injury. He did welcome back both Frank Onyeka and Yoane Wissa from the Africa Cup of Nations at the weekend.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Flekken; Collins, Ajer, Mee; Roerslev, Jensen, Norgaard, Janelt, Reguilon; Toney, Maupay

UNAVAILABLE: Pinnock (Injured), Hickey (Injured), Henry (Injured), Dasilva (Injured), Mbeumo (Injured), Schade (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Last season, Brentford did the double over Manchester City with a 2-1 win at the Etihad with a late winner from Ivan Toney just before the 2022 FIFA World Cup and then a victory at the Gtech Community Stadium on the final day of the campaign. They took the lead against City a couple of weeks ago and will provide a test for last season’s treble winners but, as has been the case in the last 18 months, the hosts have been functional and machine-like in games such as these generally and a low-scoring home win would appear likely.

TIP: MAN CITY TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
