THE LOWDOWN
LIVERPOOL
- It has been a really difficult season across all competitions so far for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. The Reds’ most recent outing was a 3-0 demolition at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly in the middle-of-the-table.
- Diogo Jota could see some minutes after a return to training while Roberto Firmino is also close, but Virgil van Dijk has not quite recovered in time for the Merseyside Derby.
EVERTON
- After the sacking of Frank Lampard and some poor business done in the transfer window, Everton’s fate appeared almost sealed. However, Sean Dyche’s first game in charge last weekend saw them gain hope as they defeated the Premier League leaders Arsenal at Goodison Park.
- Dominic Calvert-Lewin is rated as “touch and go” with a tight hamstring, which could see Neal Maupay start in the central striker position.

THE PREDICTION
Quite incredibly, as we approach mid-February, Liverpool are yet to win a Premier League game in 2023. The home team come into this on the back of that aforementioned 3-0 defeat at Molineux, making it just one win in their seven matches in all competitions so far in this calendar year. The attack lacks efficiency and fluency with the midfield floundering and ageing ahead of a defence that is underperforming and depleted due to injury. With a lack of cohesion anywhere on the pitch, they face their city rivals on the back of a crucial and memorable victory last weekend. Everton, under Sean Dyche, will be consistent in their approach and a lot more competent at both ends of the pitch than they were under Frank Lampard. Recent evidence suggests this is going to be intense but a Merseyside Derby that is probably lacking much goalmouth action.
