THE LOWDOWN
CHELSEA
On Thursday evening, up against his former side, Mauricio Pochettino oversaw an impressive Chelsea performance as they cruised to a comfortable 2-0 defeat of capital city rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Conor Gallagher’s first-half free-kick was headed in impressively by Trevoh Chalobah before Cole Palmer struck the cross-bar with a free-kick in the second-half but Nicolas Jackson scored the rebound.
The Blues have kept themselves in contention for a top seven finish and potential European qualification at the end of what has been a turbulent and fairly miserable campaign for the large part. That victory means they have suffered just one defeat in their last 11 games in the Premier League.
WEST HAM
West Ham United begin the weekend also still in contention for a top seven spot as they sit two points behind Chelsea in eighth and four off Newcastle, five below Manchester United in sixth. The Hammers have endured a really difficult 2024 and the pressure has grown on David Moyes to the point where it is now expected he will depart at the end of this season.
The Irons come into this one on the back of a 2-2 draw against Liverpool at the London Stadium last weekend with Jarrod Bowen opening the scoring before Michail Antonio then rescued a point. That means, fairly remarkably, they have managed just four victories in their last 22 matches across all competitions.
THE TEAM NEWS
CHELSEA
In the aftermath of Chelsea's comfortable victory the other day, Mauricio Pochettino suggested that both Levi Colwill and Christopher Nkunku would return for the clash with West Ham.
There was no update on Malo Gusto but the likes of Robert Sanchez, Reece James, Lesley Ugochukwu and Raheem Sterling had all restarted 'partial training' last week.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Petrovic; Gilchrist, Chalobah, Badiashile, Cucurella; Gallagher, Moises Caicedo; Madueke, Palmer, Mudryk; Jackson
UNAVAILABLE: Fofana (Injured), Silva (Injured), Disasi (Injured), Chilwell (Injured), Lavia (Injured), Fernandez (Injured), Chukwuemeka (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Sanchez (Injured), Colwill (Injured), James (Injured), Gusto (Injured), Ugochukwu (Injured), Sterling (Injured), Nkunku (Injured)
WEST HAM
There have been no updates on defensive duo Konstantinos Mavropanos and Nayef Ageurd, who were both still out injured last weekend when the Irons faced Liverpool.
There was talk that Mavropanos may have returned against the Reds but he remains a doubt. George Earthy has returned from his concussion now, though.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Coufal, Zouma, Ogbonna, Emerson; Soucek, Edson Alvarez; Bowen, Paqueta, Kudus; Antonio
UNAVAILABLE:
QUESTIONABLE: Mavropanos (Injured), Ageurd (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
For a third successive match, Chelsea are set to do battle in a fierce London derby. The Blues have been genuinely much-improved since the turn of the year and, despite the enormous waste of over £1 billion, there is the start of something potentially building for Pochettino. West Ham have been underwhelming throughout this calendar year to the point of embarrassment with four wins in four months. Given that, as well as home advantage, backing Chelsea to continue their winning ways seems a good bet but they are usually good for conceding.
TIP: CHELSEA TO WIN & BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
