THE LOWDOWN

CHELSEA

  • This almost feels like a must-win game for Graham Potter with his side currently without a victory in their last four games in all competitions – the latest setback a 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
  • Armed with a huge squad, Potter has chopped and changed things frequently and we are likely to see Benoit Badiashile return to the starting line-up given that he is not included in the Blues’ Champions League squad, while Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount could be in-line for recalls to the starting line-up.

SOUTHAMPTON

  • Bottom-of-the-table Southampton’s defeat to ten-man Wolves last weekend proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Nathan Jones’ brief tenure in charge, with the Saints board still currently searching for a replacement.
  • Kyle Walker-Peters has been pictured in training and could recover in time to feature here, while interim boss Ruben Seles could be without striker Che Adams, who is a doubt with a knock.

THE PREDICTION

Nathan Jones’ fairly disastrous stint as Southampton manager came to an end in the wake of their defeat to Wolves last weekend, and they now face a team whose manager will also be feeling the strain right now. Chelsea’s January spending spree has so far failed to bring about an improvement in results, but given the undeniable talent in the squad, it seems only a matter of time before they start to find their rhythm. There may be something of a response from the Saints here following Jones’ exit, and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see them find the net, but Chelsea, despite some woes in front of goal recently, should have enough about them to score themselves.
