THE LOWDOWN

CHELSEA

  • Once again at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea failed to keep hold of a lead and ended up dropping two points, this time against Brighton on Wednesday night, meaning that moving up to second-place in the Premier League table, the Blues lost a further two points of ground to Man City and now trail to league leaders by eight points heading into this latest round of fixtures.
  • Thomas Tuchel has two more injury issues to contend with following the Brighton game, with full-back Reece James set to be out for a significant period of time after reportedly tearing a hamstring and fellow defender Andreas Christensen also injured against the Seagulls, however Christensen's fellow centre-back Thiago Silva is back in training and could well be passed fit to return for this crucial encounter.

LIVERPOOL

  • Not only did Liverpool fall to only their second Premier League defeat of the 2021-22 campaign this past Tuesday night against Leicester, they were also unable to find the net for the first time in all competitions this season.
  • The Reds clearly missed Thiago in central midfielder against the Foxes and Jurgen Klopp will be forced to do without the Spaniard again at Stamford Bridge, whilst first choice left-back Andy Robertson remains suspended following his red card against Tottenham just before Christmas.

THE PREDICTION

Chelsea have been best known for their defensive stability ever since Thomas Tuchel walked through the door as head coach, however such solidarity seems to have disappeared in recent matches, most likely due to the vast injury list that has plagued the Blues. With that in mind, a wounded Liverpool fresh off their first blank of the season will be expected to put things right against a side who have kept just one clean sheet in their last eight Premier League fixtures. However, Liverpool themselves have failed to shut their opponents out in their most recent four matches in all competitions and a Chelsea team boasting the likes of Romelu Lukaku up front are more than capable of accruing plenty of offensive joy in this match with home advantage in their favour. Therefore, regardless of who comes out on top, both teams to score has to be favoured.
