THE LOWDOWN
CHELSEA
- Before the international break, Chelsea won three and drew one game to give themselves a shot at potential European qualification and a deeper run into the UEFA Champions League, thus potentially saving Graham Potter’s job for the time being.
- Reece James and Kai Havertz are both available after withdrawing from England and Germany squads respectively over the international break. N'Golo Kante may be available after featuring in a behind closed doors friendly but Wesley Fofana, Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Christian Pulisic and Raheem Sterling remain out.
ASTON VILLA
- Unai Emery’s reign as Aston Villa boss has been excellent as they begin the match day sitting level on points with Chelsea and The Villains have been, in terms of points gained, the third best team in the league since Emery’s appointment.
- Matty Cash will be missing for a reported three weeks due to injury sustained whilst playing for Poland and Philippe Coutinho is also out. Boubacar Kamara and Leander Dendoncker ‘may’ be available, according to Emery, whilst long-term absentee Diego Carlos is available for minutes but not from the start.

THE PREDICTION
Graham Potter is known for excellent man-management and finding in-game solutions. He has a tactical flexibility, both in terms of style and system, that is impressive. However, the often overly complex patterns of play can slow a side down, even when they are as technically astute or improved as Brighton were or Chelsea are. That allows teams that are cohesive in defence and efficient in attack, such as Everton a couple of weeks ago, to always remain in the game. Aston Villa and Unai Emery fit that bill very well. These are two sides that have ambitions of breaking into the top seven and, as shown by both sitting on 38 points, are evenly matched. This should be quite an entertaining game for the neutral as Villa seek to continue their good form against an improving but still far from complete Chelsea side.
