THE LOWDOWN

BRIGHTON

Brighton are all over the place in terms of performance lately with their impressive 0-3 victory at former Premier League leaders Arsenal sandwiched between heavy defeats to Everton and Newcastle, and it is clear that Roberto De Zerbi's side are feeling the strain of their congested fixture schedule.

The Seagulls had the opportunity to upset Newcastle's Champions League hopes on Thursday, but were second best throughout. They were deservedly behind 2-0 at the break, and although Deniz Undav pulled one back early in the second half, Newcastle put the game beyond any doubt through late Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes strikes. Although a Champions League spot is still mathematically possible, a place in either the Europa League or Europa Conference League next season is much more likely at this stage.

SOUTHAMPTON

Relegation was confirmed for the Saints following their limp 2-0 defeat to Fulham last weekend, but they played as if their fate had already been sealed as they put up little resistance. With a significant points gap between themselves and their closest competitors though, it's fair to say they have been destined for the drop for some time.

The Saints hierarchy are perhaps regretting their decision to dismiss Ralph Hasenhuttl back in November, as first Nathan Jones and now current boss Ruben Seles have failed to inspire any sort of improvement. If anything, performances have deteriorated as a result of the upheaval. Seles' future is now undoubtedly in question, as after a promising start to his tenure, the Saints' survival hopes fizzled out before they really began.

THE TEAM NEWS

BRIGHTON

De Zerbi has mentioned fixture congestion numerous times recently so their inconsistent performances certainly point to a level of fatigue. That was clearly evident in the closing stages against Newcastle so he may well need to switch things up again here. Jan Paul van Hecke struggled in central defence on Thursday and it would be no surprise to see Levi Colwill - who missed out through tiredness - return to the starting line-up here.

Alexis Mac Allister is a strong candidate to come back into the side, but Kauro Mitoma could be next in-line for a benching after an overload of minutes recently. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Robert Sanchez may have played his last game for the club after refusing to sit on the bench recently.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Steele; Caicedo, Colwill, Dunk, Estupinan; Gross, Gilmour; Buonanotte, Mac Allister, Enciso; Ferguson

UNAVAILABLE: Webster (Injured), Lamptey (Injured), Moder (Injured), Lallana (Injured), March (Injured), Sarmiento (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Sanchez (Personal reasons), Veltman (Injured)

SOUTHAMPTON

Heavy changes are expected here with Ruben Selles stating that some academy players will get a run-out in light of the Saints' relegation. How many Selles throws in from the start remains to be seen, but Dom Ballard, Kami Doyle and Sam Amo-Ameyaw have all been training with the first team this week and should see pitch-time at some point.

Che Adams continues to be a doubt and may not feature again this season, while Tino Livramento could return if he is deemed fit enough.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): McCarthy; Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Caleta-Car, Maitland-Niles; Ward-Prowse, Lavia; Walcott, Doyle, Djenepo; Ballard

UNAVAILABLE: Salisu (Injured), Bella-Kotchap (Injured), Perraud (Injured), Larios (Injured), Livramento (Fitness)

QUESTIONABLE: Adams (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

It's difficult to know what to expect from Brighton at the moment, but one thing you can guarantee in their matches is goals. They haven't contested a goalless draw in the Premier league since October, and their last three fixtures have yielded 14 goals. Against a Southampton side who are likely to field some academy players hoping to impress ahead of a season in the Championship, an open and attacking contest is in the offing with over 3.5 goals worth looking at in the betting markets.

TIP: OVER 3.5 GOALS
