THE LOWDOWN

BRIGHTON

2022-23 was a superb campaign for Brighton as they qualified for Europe for the first time in their history, and there is a clear unity in the squad with the players buying into Roberto De Zerbi's efforts.

Despite the loss of Alexis Mac Allister, and almost certainly Moises Caicedo unless any potential move falls through, the Seagulls have recruited well and boast an exciting young team heading into the new campaign. Key for them will be how they juggle the rigours of both domestic and European football.

LUTON

Luton return to the top flight of English football for the first time in over 30 years after securing promotion through the Championship play-offs last season. Many onlookers are expecting them to go straight back down given their limited means but they have made a good fist of it in the transfer market, bringing in a mix of youth and experience to bolster the squad.

THE TEAM NEWS

BRIGHTON

Moises Caicedo will not be considered for selection even if his move away from the club doesn't materialise, while Adam Webster and Adam Lallana are carrying knocks and De Zerbi may err on the side of caution.

Jason Steele will get the nod in goal for this one, while Joao Pedro could get his competitive debut in one of the attacking areas. Evan Ferguson did not feature a great deal during pre-season, so veteran striker Danny Welbeck is expected to lead the line.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Steele, Veltman, Van Hecke, Dunk, Estupinan; Dahoud, Gross; March, Joao Pedro, Mitoma; Welbeck

UNAVAILABLE: Caicedo (Out of favour)

QUESTIONABLE: Webster (Injured), Lallana (Injured)

LUTON

Mads Andersen has been declared fit and available after a bout of illness threatened to keep the defender out of Luton's Premier League opener, but Reece Burke, Gabriel Osho, Dan Potts and Jordan Clark are definitely not available for selection.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Kaminski; Andersen, Lockyer, Bell; Kabore, Nakamba, Mpanzu, Chong, Giles; Adebayo, Morris

UNAVAILABLE: Burke (Injured), Osho (Injured), Potts (Injured), Clark (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Brighton may find life a little tougher this season given that they will be competing in Europe, but that is not a factor at this stage and Roberto De Zerbi's men can give their full attention to this opening fixture. This could be a rude awakening for newly-promoted Luton against one of the most exciting teams in the division, with Brighton determined to prove that they can keep improving despite the loss of some big players over the summer. The potential sale of Moise Caicedo is an unwelcome distraction but not one that should effect this result, so a home win in a match containing over 2.5 goals is the prediction.

TIP: BRIGHTON TO WIN & OVER 2.5 GOALS
