THE LOWDOWN

BRENTFORD

  • You have to go all the way to January 2nd for Brentford’s last Premier League victory, a 2-1 triumph at home to Aston Villa, since then the Bees have played seven top-flight games and lost six, ramping up the pressure ahead of Newcastle’s visit.
  • Despite their recent terrible run of results, excitement is in the air among Brentford fans, who are expected to see January signing Christian Eriksen take to the field here for the first time in a red and white shirt, most likely from the bench.

NEWCASTLE

  • Newcastle extended their unbeaten run to six Premier League matches last weekend following a hard-fought 1-1 draw away at high-flying West Ham, however Eddie Howe’s side come into this one just two points above the bottom three despite their fantastic recent form.
  • Howe will be sweating over the availability of Allan Saint-Maximin who will face a late fitness test ahead of this crucial fixture, although Ryan Fraser has been declared fit and available.

THE PREDICTION

Arguably the biggest match of the season so far for each of these two sides when taking into account the precarious position both find themselves in the Premier League table. Brentford have the advantage with a two-point advantage over Newcastle, however the Magpies are in far better form with ten points accrued from the last 12 available to them. Home advantage should prove crucial for Thomas Frank’s side, who have struggled badly on their travels, but they are not expected to take too many risks offensively, knowing the ramifications that defeat would bring. Due to Burnley’s excellent run of results this past week, Newcastle will be well aware of the damage losing here would cause them and with that in mind, backing the draw between these two teams looks a shrewd play with a precious point not the worst result for either.
