THE LOWDOWN
BOURNEMOUTH
Bournemouth put in a limp display in their defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend with their defensive frailties exposed yet again, although with their Premier League status retained ahead of next season, it is perhaps not surprising that Gary O'Neil's men have taken their foot off the gas a little.
The Cherries were undone by an in-form Eberechi Eze against Palace, whose goals either side of the break was enough to consign Bournemouth to a second defeat in a row, and a fifth in succession against the Eagles. Theoretically, Bournemouth could still finish as high as 11th in the table, but survival was the aim from the outset, and despite many tipping them for the drop after their promotion last season, the campaign can be seen as a relative success regardless of how they finish their last two games.
MAN UTD
Successive 1-0 defeats to Brighton and West Ham had set the alarm bells ringing in Man Utd's pursuit of a top-four finish, but the Red Devils got their charge back on track with a 2-0 victory over Wolves last Saturday, and their fate is very much in their own hands as they look to take a huge step towards Champions League football next season.
It was not an altogether convincing performance against Wolves, particularly up front where numerous chances were wasted, but Ten Hag's men were never really in danger from their toothless opponents, and goals from Anthony Martial and the returning Alejandro Garnacho were enough for victory. Following that up with another victory here will go a long way to ensuring a top-four finish, and they will aim to do so against a side they beat convincingly 3-0 in the reverse fixture in January.
THE TEAM NEWS
BOURNEMOUTH
Gary O'Neil made a couple of changes to his backline against Crystal Palace but it did not have the desired effect, so the likes of Chris Mepham and Adam Smith could return to the fold here. The front four, meanwhile, has remained unchanged for the last three games but there are alternative options with Jaidon Anthony, David Brooks and Kieffer Moore waiting in the wings.
Antoine Semenyo has undergone surgery and faces a spell of rehabilitation, while Hamed Traore has trained all week but is not yet fit enough to make the squad.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Neto; Mepham, Senesi, Kelly, Vina; Lerma, Rothwell; Ouattara, Billing, Christie; Solanke
UNAVAILABLE: Tavernier (Injured), Fredericks (Injured), Semenyo (Injured), Traore (Fitness), Stanislas (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
MAN UTD
After missing out through injury against Wolves, Marcus Rashford returned to training but has subsequently picked up an illness and is doubtful for the trip down south. Given the importance of securing Champions League football next season, Ten Hag will give the England international every chance of recovering, but Jadon Sancho is poised to deputise once more if need be, with perhaps a bench spot more likely for Rashford.
Anthony Martial is enjoying a rare spell of fitness and is likely to be preferred to Wout Weghorst up front, while the back four should remain unchanged. Scott McTominay is back in training and could make the squad, but Marcel Sabitzer will take no further part this season.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Lindelof, Shaw; Casemiro, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Sancho; Martial
UNAVAILABLE: Jones (Injured), Martinez (Injured), Van de Beek (Injured), Sabitzer (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Heaton (Fitness), McTominay (Fitness), Rashford (Illness)
THE PREDICTION
This fixture is perhaps fortunate timing for Man Utd as they face a Bournemouth side who look to be winding down for the season given that they have nothing left to really play for. The visitors, on the other hand, will be highly motivated to take a step towards Champions League football next season, and that added incentive is likely to see them play with a greater intensity than the hosts. Expect Ten Hag's men to come firing out of the blocks, and despite the potential absence of Marcus Rashford, they look more than capable of leading this game at both half-time and full-time.
