THE LOWDOWN

BOURNEMOUTH

Coached by former Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola, AFC Bournemouth have put in some very impressive performances so far this season and they appeared to be ending a winless run of form in the Premier League last weekend with a victory against Newcastle United but instead conceded a late equaliser to former Cherries man Matt Ritchie to ensure they remain winless in 2024.

Playing a proactive and entertaining style of football, Bournemouth have put several teams to the sword so far this season but defensive issues have remained. They have, for example, conceded 46 goals in 24 matches so far; only the three newly-promoted teams of Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United have conceded more often than them.

MAN CITY

Manchester City made it 12 victories in 13 matches across all competitions with a slender 1-0 defeat of Brentford in midweek with Erling Haaland scoring a 71st minute winner in that game. Despite that victory helping them close them keep up the pressure at the top-of-the-table, it was a continuation of a theme of City being fairly unconvincing of late.

They only just edged past Brentford and found it very difficult to break down The Bees just a few days after dropping points at home to Chelsea after needing a late equaliser in that match. Quite surprisingly for Manchester City, they have only won one game by more than two goals in their last 11 matches and they haven’t done it in the league in their last 14.

THE PREDICTION

In the reverse fixture between these two, Manchester City thrashed AFC Bournemouth by six goals to one at the Etihad Stadium. Bournemouth have since improved and then declined, whilst City have done the opposite, massively steadying the ship after an autumnal wobble. Andoni Iraola will attempt to get on the front foot against City but there is an expectation that City are able to once again rack up a score, which hasn’t actually been the case that often.
