THE LOWDOWN
ASTON VILLA
On Thursday evening, Aston Villa suffered a 2-0 loss in Piraeus to Greek giants Olympiakos and crashed out of the UEFA Europa Conference League at the semi-final stage with a 6-2 aggregate defeat. Unai Emery’s Villains could not cope with the intensity and organisation of the Greeks and there will be cause for concern as the season draws in.
Villa begin the match day sitting seven points clear of Tottenham Hotspur in fourth but a Spurs win on Saturday at home to relegation-bound Burnley will make that gap just four points as Spurs prepare for their game-in-hand against Manchester City in midweek. Villa have showed signs of fatigue and could really do with easing some nerves.
LIVERPOOL
Liverpool, due to their poor spring in which points were dropped on a regular basis as well as eliminations at the quarter-final stage of both the FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League, have very little to play for in what is going to be the final week of Jurgen Klopp’s reign in charge of the Reds as he bows out at the end of this season.
Third place is all but secured and there will be an emotional send off at Anfield against Wolverhampton Wanderers next week. In the meantime, their job will be to stop any party at Villa Park and try to finish the Klopp era with a bit of a flourish. They enjoyed a 4-2 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield last weekend.
THE TEAM NEWS
ASTON VILLA
In his post-match interview after Aston Villa suffered defeat to Olympiakos, Unai Emery has said that both Youri Tielemans and Nicolo Zaniolo are 'close' to returning from injury.
He has also said that full-back Alex Moreno is a 'maybe' for the clash with Liverpool. They do remain without long-term absentees Tyrone Mings, Jacob Ramsey and Emi Buendia.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Emiliano Martinez; Konsa, Diego Carlos, Torres; Cash, Douglas Luiz, McGinn, Digne; Bailey, Watkins, Diaby
UNAVAILABLE: Mings (Injured), Kamara (Injured), Ramsey (Injured), Emi Buendia (Injured), Rogers (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Tielemans (Injured), Zaniolo (Injured)
LIVERPOOL
Jurgen Klopp did not give too much way regarding team news in his pre-match press conference. It is known, though, that Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara and Ben Doak remain unavailable.
Klopp has previously hinted at Diogo Jota returning to the first-team at around this time given it was supposed to be a short-term hip injury that he picked up at Craven Cottage against Fulham a few weeks ago.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Endo, Szoboszlai; Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz
UNAVAILABLE: Matip (Injured), Thiago (Injured), Doak (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Diogo Jota (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
It could well be that Aston Villa have already secured UEFA Champions League qualification by the time they kick off in this game if Spurs drop points to Burnley but the likelihood is they will still need a victory to make absolutely certain. They are, though, seemingly running out of steam a bit as shown by their flat and lacklustre defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion at the AMEX Stadium last weekend. Liverpool will go to Villa Park with little to play for so will perhaps feel quite relaxed in this one and that does leave the door open for quite an entertaining game for the neutral.
