THE LOWDOWN
ASTON VILLA
- Following their surprise defeat at Watford on the opening weekend, Aston Villa got their Premier League campaign up and running at home to Newcastle last time out, beating the Magpies 2-0 thanks to a wonderful Danny Ings bicycle kick and a penalty from Anwar El Ghazi.
- Dean Smith will be without the services of attacking midfielder Bertrand Traore for this one due to a hamstring injury and faces an anxious wait as to the availability of winger Leon Bailey and forward Ollie Watkins with both facing a battle to be passed fit to play.
BRENTFORD
- A hard-fought 0-0 draw away at local rivals Crystal Palace maintained Brentford’s unbeaten start to life in the Premier League, with the Bees having picked up four points from their opening two fixtures.
- Centre-back Ethan Pinnock is a slight doubt here due to an ankle knock, but should recover in time to feature, whilst midfielder Mathias Jenson may also be passed fit although both Mads Bech Sorensen and Joshua Dasilva are both out injured.

THE PREDICTION
Aston Villa at home again will be gunning for a second successive victory, but will likely find Brentford a far tougher proposition to break down than Newcastle turned out to be. Thomas Frank’s side have been excellent defensively across their opening two league games and are yet to concede a goal. They will look to frustrate the hosts, while at the same time attempting to impose their own passing style of play on proceedings. Either way, a tight affair is in prospect with goals expected to be at a premium as was the case in Brentford’s goalless draw at Selhurst Park last weekend. Therefore, backing under 2.5 goals over 90 minutes looks the shrewd play.
Tip: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
