THE LOWDOWN
ARSENAL
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal responded well to some recent poor form by earning a comfortable and impressive 2-0 defeat of an out of form Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux at the weekend. Leandro Trossard put the Gunners ahead just before half-time before Martin Odegaard scored deep in second-half stoppage-time.
Prior to that victory, Arsenal had suffered a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League with the two legs of that tie sandwiching a 2-0 loss at home to Aston Villa. Arsenal have moved back to the top-of-the-table in the Premier League but Manchester City do have a game-in-hand ahead of this week.
CHELSEA
Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea suffered their second defeat of the season at Wembley Stadium with an EFL Cup final loss in February being joined by their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City at the weekend with Bernardo Silva scoring a late winner in yet another game whereby Chelsea wasted several opportunities.
They have been really, really entertaining to watch for the neutral as they begin this week sitting in the middle-of-the-table but still in the hunt for a top seven finish and potential European qualification. Chelsea’s 31 Premier League matches so far this season have consisted of a combined total of 113 goals so far.
THE TEAM NEWS
ARSENAL
Long-term injury absentee Jurrien Timber is expected to feature for Arsenal’s under-23’s this week before eventually progressing back into the Gunners’ first-team squad.
That is Arsenal’s only injury issue for this weekend’s visit of Chelsea so Mikel Arteta could well name an unchanged eleven from their victory at the weekend.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): David Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Kiwior; Odegaard, Rice, Havertz; Saka, Gabriel Jesus, Trossard
UNAVAILABLE: Timber (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
CHELSEA
Mauricio Pochettino has been dealt another major blow as key attacker Cole Palmer missed training on Monday and could be unavailable for this London derby with Arsenal.
The Argentine coach remains without several other key first-teamers such as Robert Sanchez, Wesley Fofana, Reece James and Christopher Nkunku.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Petrovic; Disasi, Silva, Badiashile, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Madueke, Gallagher, Mudryk; Jackson
UNAVAILABLE: Sanchez (Injured), Fofana (Injured), Colwill (Injured), James (Injured), Chilwell (Injured), Ugochukwu (Injured), Lavia (Injured), Nkunku (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Gusto (Injured), Palmer (Illness)
THE PREDICTION
Arsenal facing Chelsea should not necessarily be a foregone conclusion and it is perhaps not a completely one-sided contest but the hosts are overwhelming favourites for this one. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have scored 77 goals in the league so far and they are the top scorers in the league with Chelsea, alongside Newcastle United, the league’s ‘entertainers’ this year. Arsenal are firm favourites for what could and should well be a high-scoring encounter.
TIP: ARSENAL TO WIN & OVER 2.5 GOALS
