PERU PREVIEW: A NEW ERA

Ricardo Gareca brought Peru back to the world stage in 2018 when they qualified for the FIFA World Cup and they also reached a Copa America final under him but it is the first tournament of the Jorge Fossati era and the style of football has begun to evolve.

Jorge Fossati took charge right at the end of 2023 and has only coached four friendly matches but the Peruvians have won three and drawn one of those four matches, albeit those victories against weak opposition in Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and El Salvador.

CHILE PREVIEW: RE-HASHING THE OLD ERA

Under Marcelo Bielsa and Jorge Sampaoli, Chile were one of the most entertaining international sides in the world to watch and a lot of that squad remains. In fact, the Chileans have four players with over 100 caps and ten of their 26-man squad are aged 30 or over.

Ricardo Gareca took charge of the Chileans back in January and it is fitting his first competitive match is against his former side. Since his appointment, Chile have hammered both Albania and Paraguay, sandwiching an entertaining 3-2 loss to France in Marseille.

PERU TEAM NEWS: COUNTER-ATTACKING PERUVIANS

The tactical game plan of Peru will be about width and crossing. With a solid back three, both wing-backs Marcos Lopez and the pacey Luis Advincula will be essential to getting Peru up the pitch in order to provide for 40-year-old captain Paolo Guerrero as well as Italy-born former Italy B international Gianluca Lapadula.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Pedro Gallese; Alexander Callens, Luis Abram, Carlos Zambrano; Luis Advincula, Sergio Pena, Wilder Cartagena, Jesus Castillo, Marcos Lopez; Gianluca Lapadula, Paolo Guerrero

CHILE TEAM NEWS: EXPERIENCED CHILEANS

The Chileans have a host of probably household names from their exploits at both the 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2014 FIFA World Cup, as well as numerous Copa America tournaments, and, whilst not as aggressive in the press as they once were, the vast majority of their play will go through Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas with added support coming from Norwich midfielder Marcelino Nunez.

PREDICTED XI (X-X-X-X): Claudio Bravo; Isla, Guillermo Maripan, Paulo Diaz, Gabriel Suazo; Marcelino Nunez, Erick Pulgar; Victor Davila, Sanchez, Diego Valdes; Eduardo Vargas

PERU VS CHILE PREDICTION

This one has the potential to be a really entertaining clash to complete the first round of fixtures in Group A with both Peru and Chile aiming to play a progressive style of football under new management. The Peruvians have been much-improved since the appointment of Jorge Fossati, but the same can be said for Chile under Ricardo Gareca. Neither enjoyed a positive autumn but an improved spring will have them both believing they can ‘go at’ one another here with both teams scoring a good bet.
