Unlike UEFA EURO 2024 where teams are always alive with a game to go due to the best third placed rule, the Copa America is a lot more cut-throat and Peru will have the chance to put Canada right on the verge of elimination in this one.

PERU PREVIEW: PERU TO TAKE A MASSIVE EDGE

Now under the management of Jorge Fossati, who replaced long time boss Ricardo Gareca, the Peruvians have a chance to inch their way into the quarter-finals after they began with a goalless draw against Chile the other day.

Peru would move on to four points and knock Canada out of the tournament with a win combined with Argentina defeating Chile in their second game. It was a typical opening scoreline whereby they were naturally robust defensively but lacking in attack.

CANADA PREVIEW: CANADA COULD BE ON THE BRINK

Jesse Marsch spoke of his displeasure at Argentina coming out of the half-time interval too late and hinted at bias, suggesting that if it was Canada then they would be fined. He will likely blame the extra time waiting for Argentina’s opening goal.

After a lacklustre first-half, the world champions took just four minutes of the second period to break the deadlock via Julian Alvarez before securing all three points via Lautaro Martinez in the 88th minute, leaving Marsch and Canada in a very difficult position.

PERU TEAM NEWS: REPLACING LUIS ADVINCULA

Peru had to withdraw rapid wing-back Luis Advincula early on in their opener against Chile so Marcos Lopez is expected to come in at left wing-back with winger Andy Polo at right wing-back. 40-year-old captain Paolo Guerrero is expected to be on the bench behind Edison Flores.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Pedro Gallese; Miguel Araujo, Carlos Zambrano, Alexander Callens; Andy Polo, Wilder Cartagena, Sergio Pena, Piero Quispe, Marcos Lopez; Gianluca Lapadula, Edison Flores

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE: Luis Advincula (Injured)

CANADA TEAM NEWS: GO AGAIN

Jesse Marsch is expected to keep a very similar line-up for this second game and the Canadians could even be entirely unchanged. The 4-4-2 or 4-2-2-2 system is certainly something that should suit the tactical preferences of Marsch.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Crepeau; Johnston, Moise Bombito, Cornelius, David; Buchanan, Kone, Eustaquio, Millar; David, Larin

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE:

PERU VS CANADA PREDICTION

As mentioned, Peru have a tendency to be quite tedious for the neutral. Their goalless draw with Paraguay in their opening match means that only three of their last 25 matches since early 2022 have featured more than two goals in the game. Canada, on the other hand, will attempt to play a pressing and intense style of football but the detail to Marsch’s coaching instructions is probably not ideal to such a short turnaround since his appointment. It has been a low-scoring tournament thus far and that seems likely to continue.

PERU VS CANADA TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
