The defending champions, Argentina, were the first team to head through to the quarter-finals of the 2024 Copa America after back-to-back victories against Canada and Chile to kick off their campaign. Peru, on the other hand, must win and hope the other result goes their way.

ARGENTINA PREVIEW: CREATING A DYNASTY

The world champions are through to the last eight after two victories in which they have kept clean sheets against Canada and Chile but neither victory was overwhelmingly convincing and some things may need to be ironed out ahead of the knockouts.

It took until the 49th minute of their opener against Canada for them to open the scoring via Julian Alvarez before Lautaro Martinez scored late to seal three points and the latter was needed to score a late winner against Chile the other day.

PERU PREVIEW: PERUVIAN UNDERPERFORMANCE

Following the departure of Ricardo Gareca and the appointment of Jorge Fossati, the Peruvians have been quite underwhelming and that has continued into this tournament with the possibility of an early exit now very likely.

After a slow start to CONMEBOL qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Peru did manage some friendly wins earlier this year against Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and El Salvador but they are yet to score and have collected just one point in this tournament.

ARGENTINA TEAM NEWS: CHANGES IN THE OFFING

Argentina are through so may make a few changes to give players minutes, such as Nicolas Otamendi and Alejandro Garnacho. Lautaro Martinez’ form should get him into the eleven, whilst Rodrigo De Paul may be rested for this one as he is a yellow card away from suspension.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Franco Armani; Nahuel Molina, Romero, Otamendi, Tagliafico; Alejandro Garnacho, Fernandez, Rodriguez, Mac Allister; Messi, Lautaro Martinez

PERU TEAM NEWS: DEFENSIVE ISSUES

Peru were without their rapid wing-back and key man for both defence and attack, Luis Advincula, against Canada the other day after his injury forced him off against Chile. Miguel Araujo will be suspended for this one after headbutting Alistair Johnston of Celtic and Canada the other day.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Pedro Gallese; Luis Abram, Carlos Zambrano, Alexander Callens; Andy Polo, Sergio Pena, Wilder Cartagena, Pedro Quispe, Marcos Lopez; Gianluca Lapadula, Edison Flores

UNAVAILABLE: Miguel Araujo (Suspended)

QUESTIONABLE: Luis Advincula (Injured)

ARGENTINA VS PERU PREDICTION

Argentina, albeit unconvincing in terms of the scoreline, were much the better of the two sides in their 1-0 defeat of Chile the other day with Claudio Bravo picking up the Player of the Match award for eight saves that he made in that game. Peru were quite recently one of the more entertaining teams to watch in South America but now it seems really difficult to see how they will get at an experienced and well-constructed back four with Argentina expected to win with their clean sheets intact.
