THE LOWDOWN

UNION SAINT-GILLOISE

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise have the ability to deal with losing key players as they benefit from the same off-field strategies as Brighton and Hove Albion, as an affiliate of the Premier League club. They lost Victor Boniface, for example, this summer but have arguably improved as they seek to, yet again, challenge for the Jupiler Pro League title.

Union SG begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting at the top-of-the-table in Belgium’s top-flight after ten matches. They have managed seven victories and a draw so far. Their most recent outing was an impressive 4-0 hammering of Sint-Truiden, prior to the international break, extending their winning streak to four successive matches.

EUPEN

The reduction in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League from 18 to 16 teams over the summer has left a lot of clubs concerned that they are more likely to be drawn into a relegation fight. Eupen, after struggling for much of last season, are very much one of those teams and, despite a strong start, collapsed in form prior to the October international break.

The appointment of Florian Kohfeldt led to an immediate improvement at the start of this season but their 4-1 hammering at the hands of defending champions Royal Antwerp a couple of weeks ago means that they have now suffered five successive defeats as they sit just above the bottom four and the relegation round places.

THE TEAM NEWS

UNION SAINT-GILLOISE

Union SG’s latest start, Dennis Eckert, started the season very well before his injury. He is still a doubt but could return for the Brussels club this week.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Moris; Mac Allister, Burgess, Machida; Castro-Montes, Sadiki, Rasmussen, Lapoussin; Amani, Nilsson, Puertas

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE: Eckert (Injured)

EUPEN

Florian Kohfeldt has several doubts for this one with Brian Lambert, Teddy Alloh and Bartosz Bialek are all potentially unavailable for this weekend’s encounter.

PREDICTED XI (5-4-1): Slonina; Magnee, Paeshuyse, Palsson, Davidson, Van Genechten; Nuhu, Baiye, Christie-Davies, Pantovic; Finnbogason

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE: Lambert (Injured), Alloh (Injured), Bialek (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This is expected to be a completely one-sided affair to restart the Belgian top-flight. Union SG have challenged for the title in each of the last two seasons and, despite major departures, actually look stronger than they have done as a unit. They face a Eupen side that have remained entertaining but extremely open at the back in their terrible recent run of form to a high-scoring home win is the expected outcome of this one.
