THE LOWDOWN

GENT

For much of last season, Gent were in the top four and looking certain to end up in the end of season championship round playoff places. However, under the management of Hein Vanhaezebrouck, they slipped out of those top four spots on the final day of the regular season to the then reigning champions, Club Brugge.

Over the summer transfer window, they managed to hold on to their key players, such as Hugo Cuypers and Gift Orban. They suffered their first defeat of the Jupiler Pro League season last weekend, losing by two goals to nil against Cercle Brugge. Since then, though, they have hammered Breidablik by five goals to nil in the UEFA Europa Conference League group stages.

STANDARD LIEGE

Under the ownership of 777 Partners, one of Belgium’s ‘big three’, Standard Liege, have drifted away and become and also-ran in Belgian football. They were much-improved last year under Ronny Deila and finished in the top eight but his sudden departure led to another poor run. However, some excellent business late in the window has created a much-improved Standard Liege side.

The visitors come into this one on the back of an entertaining 3-2 victory over Anderlecht in their most recent outing, las weekend. That was their third successive league victory and means they are now unbeaten in their last eight matches as they launch themselves into the top-half of the table and towards the top six.

THE TEAM NEWS

GENT

The home team are without Laurent Depoitre, due to injury, and could also be missing Paul Nardi, who is a doubt for the visit of Standard Liege, this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Delanghe; Watanabe, Torunarigha, Brown; Samoise, Kums, De Sart, Hong; Hjulsager; Cuypers, Orban

UNAVAILABLE: Depoitre (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Nardi (Injured)

STANDARD LIEGE

There are no fresh injury or suspension concerns for Carl Hoefkens so they could name an unchanged eleven for this weekend’s encounter against Gent.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Bodart; Vanheusden, Bope, Ngoy; Fossey, Kawabe, Hayden, Alzate, Djenepo; Sowah, Kanga

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE: Laifis (Injured), Hautekiet (Injured), Mundle (Injured), Perica (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This is a bit of a historically heavyweight clash in Belgian football with two sides that expect a lot. Gent began the season very well but are now on a four-match winless run of form as they drift away from the top-of-the-table. Standard Liege head into the game in excellent form and rising quickly, playing an entertaining style of football. Standard are probably favourites for this one given the form but a good, safe value bet would have both teams scoring.

BETTING TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
