THE LOWDOWN

GENT

On the final day of the 2022/23 Jupiler Pro League regular season, Gent finished outside of the top four to the then reigning champions Club Brugge. That was a disappointment expected to be brushed aside and built upon this season with improvement and they have managed to keep hold of key players, such as Hugo Cuypers and Gift Orban.

The home team come into this on the back of an impressive 2-0 win at home to Robbie Keane’s Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the group stages of the UEFA Europa Conference League. Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s side have been entertaining this season and they remain unbeaten in the league, too, with five victories and four draws in their opening nine matches of the campaign.

GENK

Under the management of Wouter Vrancken, Genk spent a lot of last season on top-of-the-table but eventually faded before the end of the campaign and, after a poor calendar year, missed out on the title in dramatic circumstances on the final day of the season to Royal Antwerp. They have had to brush themselves down but, after a slow start, are beginning to pick up as we head into Autumn.

The visitors went away to Serbia in midweek to defeat Cukaricki in the UEFA Europa Conference League, after being eliminated from both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League in August. They have had five draws in nine matches so far this season and that frustrating form has them only just sitting inside the top six at the beginning of this weekend’s round of fixtures.

THE PREDICTION

The Belgian Jupiler Pro League is often one of the most entertaining and high-scoring leagues in European football and that has been the case with both of these sides, too. Gent’s nine matches in the league have consisted of 24 goals with 15 scored, which is the exact same record as their upcoming opponents. Gent may be a little conservative in order to preserve their unbeaten record but it could and should still remain something worth watching so bot teams scoring looks a good bet.
