THE LOWDOWN

GENT

Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s Gent reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League last season before missing out on the top four on the final day of the regular Belgian Jupiler Pro League season. They remain a very strong side, albeit they have been hampered by endless transfer speculation surrounding key attacking duo Hugo Cuypers and Gift Orban.

They come into this on the back of a 2-1 defeat of APOEL Nicosia in Cyprus in the second-leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League playoff round tie, winning 4-1 on aggregate. Gent have qualified comfortably for the group stages and have also been impressive in the Jupiler Pro League with three victories and a draw in their four matches.

CLUB BRUGGE

Despite reaching the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League last season, Club Brugge enjoyed a very disappointing 2022/23 Belgian Jupiler Pro League season as they relinquished the title. They have, though, begun this season in exceptional and extremely exciting form under the management of former New York City and Celtic manager Ronny Deila.

Club Brugge come into this on the back of an impressive 4-3 aggregate victory over La Liga side Osasuna in the playoffs of the UEFA Europa Conference League. The visitors have been in excellent form across all competitions so far this season with 26 goals scored in their last six matches. They have collected ten points from their opening four top-flight matches.

THE TEAM NEWS

GENT

Hein Vanhaezebrouck is without a couple of key players but he should name an unchanged side for this one after their impressive start to the Jupiler Pro League season.

PREDICTED XI (X-X-X-X): PREDICTED XI HERE

UNAVAILABLE: Fofana (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Depoitre (Injured)

CLUB BRUGGE

Club Brugge are without a fair few players for this one and have had to deal with the complication of their tie with Osasuna in midweek but they are expected to remain unchanged.

PREDICTED XI (X-X-X-X): PREDICTED XI HERE

UNAVAILABLE: Nielsen (Injured), Talbi (Injured), Meijer (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Bursik (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

These are two of the better sides in Belgium’s top-flight and they are both expected to challenge for the Belgian title towards the end of the season. Belgian football has been one of the most proactive and tactically attacking styles across the continent. They are both high-scoring and have both enjoyed extremely impressive respective starts to the season. Club Brugge look absolutely relentless under Deila, whilst Gent have players beyond the level of most Belgian clubs. Both teams scoring seems inevitable for this one.
