THE LOWDOWN
CLUB BRUGGE
In the defence of their Belgian title last season, Club Brugge struggled badly with four managers over the course of the campaign as they only just squeezed into the top four and the championship round of the Jupiler Pro League table last season. They have, though, been reignited under the management of former Celtic and NYCFC boss Ronny Deila so far this season.
They have qualified for the group stages of the UEFA Europa Conference League with some impressive performances and results, eventually defeating La Liga opposition in Osasuna in the playoffs. Their last seven matches across all competitions have consisted of 34 goals with them scoring 27 of those as they start the season well.
SPORTING CHARLEROI
Felice Mazzu returned to Sporting Charleroi mid-way through last season but the former Anderlecht and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise coach failed to really ignite any sort of form. They finished firmly in the middle-of-the-table and will be one of a few mid-table sides looking over their shoulders with the Jupiler Pro League being reduced in size from 18 to 16 teams.
They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom four and the relegation playoff area for the end of the season. They are still winless after six games, having collected just four points at the start of this year. Their most recent outing saw them share a 1-1 draw at home to Sint-Truiden. They have scored just four goals in six games so far this season.
THE TEAM NEWS
CLUB BRUGGE
Ronny Deila has a few key doubts for this weekend, such as Casper Nielsen and Bjorn Meijer, and he will definitely be without Canadian international Tajon Buchanan.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Mignolet; Spileers, Mechele, Boyata, De Cuyper; Vetlesen, Onyedika; Zinckernagel, Vanaken, Nusa; Thiago
UNAVAILABLE: Buchanan (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Nielsen (Injured), Talbi (Injured), Meijer (Injured), Bursik (Injured)
SPORTING CHARLEROI
Felice Mazzu has a couple of injury concerns but has a generally available squad and will be able to name an unchanged side for this weekend’s trip to the Jan Breydel Stadion.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Koffi; Bager, Marcq, Andreou; Rogelj, Zorgane, Morioka, Mbenza; Heymans; Dabagh, Badji
UNAVAILABLE: Monticelli (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Knezevic (Injured), Tshiend (Injured), Van Cleemput (Injured), Benbouali (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
On paper, this is one of the more one-sided games across the continent this weekend. Club Brugge have been outstanding at the start of this season and have a squad that won the league just over 12 months ago and they are seeking to reclaim that league title. Sporting Charleroi will be concerned of dropping down into the bottom four this season and, especially with their home advantage, a fairly comfortable Club Brugge victory is the expected outcome for this one.
