THE LOWDOWN
MOROCCO
In late 2022, Morocco became the first African team to reach the semi-finals of a FIFA World Cup as they defeated both Spain and Portugal in the knockout stages after beating Belgium in the group stages. Walid Regragui, who won the 2022 CAF Champions League with Wydad Casablanca, remains in charge of the north Africans heading into this tournament.
They are one of the red hot pre-tournament favourites. Morocco have managed to win this competition just once in their history, all the way back in 1976. They ended their preparation with a comfortable 3-1 defeat of Sierra Leone last week, which means they have suffered just one defeat in their last nine matches.
TANZANIA
Tanzania are competing at just their third ever Africa Cup of Nations, having been knocked out in the group stages of both the 1980 and 2019 tournaments – failing to win a game in either of those campaigns. Coached by Adel Amrouche, they will be hoping to break their duck in that regard as the ‘Taifa Stars’ generally and gradually improve.
They are currently ranked 121st in the world according to FIFA but have made themselves difficult to beat in the last couple of years. The Tanzanians most recently suffered a 2-0 loss to Egypt in a friendly last week but, prior to a defeat to Morocco in November, had suffered just one defeat in six matches across late 2022 and the vast majority of 2023.
THE TEAM NEWS

TANZANIA
Algerian coach, Adel Amrouche, has, like Regragui, been able to name his first choice 27-man squad for this Africa Cup of Nations and the Tanzanians have no injury concerns for their opening clash against one of the major pre-tournament favourites.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Manula; Mnoga, Job, Mwamnyeto, Husseini; Salum, Yahya, Yassin; Starkie, Samatta, Msuva

THE PREDICTION
Tanzania, as mentioned, have been improving and generally a bit stubborn but even when they have been improving they faced off against Morocco in November and were comfortably beaten. The Moroccans have not been real challengers for this tournament for far too long and they should win this one quite comfortably to kick off their campaign with a side that reached the final four of the world just over a year ago.
TIP: MOROCCO TO WIN
