THE PREDICTION

In 2002, Senegal had a golden generation. Their captain, Aliou Cisse, missed the crucial penalty as The Lions of Teranga lost to Cameroon in their first ever AFCON final. They also reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea. They have still not won the tournament. However, their manager, Aliou Cisse, has his sights set on changing that. The Senegalese have an impressive spine that is made up of UEFA Champions League winners among many other crucial players at major clubs in Europe’s major leagues. They started the tournament slowly but clicked into gear in the last eight with a comfortable 3-1 defeat of Equatorial Guinea. The great under performers of African football now come up against the most successful team in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations. The Pharaoh's are seven-time winners and they defeated Cameroon on penalties in the semi-finals. They have been very reliant on Mohamed Salah’s attacking influence with a defensive stubbornness and solidity emblematic of their manager, Carlos Queiroz. The issue, though, is that Queiroz will not be on the side of the pitch following his red card against Cameroon. The Senegalese will come into this as the slight favourites but a low-scoring encounter with under 2.5 goals, in keeping with the theme of the tournament, looks a likely outcome for this one.
