THE LOWDOWN

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND

  • The Republic of Ireland are playing at their first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup and, with a game left in the group stages, they have already been eliminated with back-to-back defeats against Australia and Canada.
  • In their opening match, the Irish were beaten 1-0 by co-hosts Australia via a 52nd minute penalty from Steph Catley. They followed that up by being beaten 2-1 by Canada, despite taking an early lead in that match.

NIGERIA

  • Nigeria, under the management of Randy Waldrum, come into this on the back of a shock 3-2 win against co-hosts Australia the other day. The Nigerians went behind late in the first-half but then were the better side to take all three points.
  • That victory followed a goalless draw with Canada in their opening match which means they head into the final round of group stage fixtures knowing that a win will seal top spot in the group.

THE KEY STATS

  • Republic of Ireland are aiming to end the tournament with a positive result having lost their previous two matches.
  • Katie McCabe became the first player to score a FIFA Women’s World Cup goal for the Republic of Ireland when she opened the scoring against Canada.

THE PREDICTION

Whilst this game, on the face of it, means very little for the Republic of Ireland, it actually means a whole lot. The Irish are playing at what they hope to be the first of many FIFA Women’s World Cups and they will want to depart ‘down under’ with something to show. In contrast, Nigeria are eyeing up entering the knockout stages as group winners, ahead of both Canada and Australia. Given their impressive results so far, a low-scoring Nigerian win seems the way to go for this one.

TIP: NIGERIA TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
