THE LOWDOWN

PANAMA

  • Panama were ran ragged by Brazil last time out, with the gulf in class between both sides very much evident, Brazil racking up 73% possession and over 30 shots on goal in a comprehensive 4-0 victory.
  • That loss leaves Panama already on the brink of elimination from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup when considering the blow to their goal difference in particular and Ignacio Quintana, the youngest head coach in the competition has a huge task to rally the Panama players ahead of this crucial battle.

JAMAICA

  • Jamaica earned plenty of plaudits in their first match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, holding a formidable French side to a 0-0 draw, but that result came at a cost with the sending off of star forward Khadija Shaw in second half stoppage time.
  • That red card means that Jamaica’s all-time top goalscorer will be suspended for their showdown with Panama, a huge blow for the Reggae Girlz with them usually so reliant on her when it comes to not only finding the net, but also as a natural leader on the pitch.

THE KEY STATS

  • This is the first competitive match between these two nations since Jamaica defeated Panama on penalties in the Concacaf Women's Championship third-place play-off in October 2018 to reach the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time.
  • Their first ever competitive encounter was won by Panama. In March 2004 they recorded a 3-0 victory over Jamaica in the Concacaf qualifying tournament for the 2004 Olympics.
  • Their only other previous competitive head-to-head fixture was a 2-0 win for Jamaica in the 2006 Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup first round.
  • Jamaica claimed a 3-1 win in their most recent meeting, which was a friendly match played in Jamaica in 2019.
  • Against France in their opening fixture, Jamaica earned their first point in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in their fourth match in the competition.
  • Both nations are aiming to win a FIFA Women’s World Cup match for the first time. Jamaica at their fifth attempt and Panama at their second.

THE PREDICTION

To gain a point vs France gives Jamaica a real platform to go on and finish in the top two of their group. You’d expect them to dictate much of the play against Panama and enjoy extended spells of domination. However, without Shaw leading the line, it will likely prove very hard for them to make things stick in attack there is an understandable question mark as to whether they require the cutting edge needed to overcome Panama. When taking this into account, a shrewd move is to back under 3.5 goals scored, regardless of the final outcome.
