THE LOWDOWN
NORWAY
- After a humiliating experience at the UEFA European Championships last summer, Norway have continued that into this tournament with rumours of rifts within the squad. The Norwegians began the groups with a 1-0 loss to New Zealand and were then held to a goalless draw by Switzerland.
- Ada Hegerberg missed that 0-0 draw with Switzerland after seemingly pulling up injured in the warm-up. They can still qualify for the knockouts if they defeat the Philippines and there is a winner in the match between Switzerland and New Zealand.
PHILIPPINES
- The Philippines, under the management of Alen Stajcic, are currently ranked 46th in the world, according to FIFA. They have qualified for their first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup and have a serious chance of making it to the knockouts.
- The ‘Filipinas’ began their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage campaign with a 2-0 loss to Switzerland but then pulled off a surprise victory against co-hosts New Zealand.

THE KEY STATS
- Norway have progressed through to the knockout phase in seven of the previous eight Women’s World Cup final competitions; the exception being 2011.
- Norway have never completed a group stage campaign in the FIFA Women’s World Cup without winning a match.
- Norway have not won in their last four FIFA Women’s World Cup matches (D2 L2). This is their longest ever winless run at the finals.
- Norway have not scored a goal in their last three FIFA Women’s World Cup matches. This is their longest sequence without scoring a goal in the history of the tournament.
- Norway’s match against Switzerland resulted in their first 0-0 draw in the FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage (26th match) and only their second goalless draw in 42 matches overall following a 0-0 draw against Brazil in the match for third place in 1999 (L 5-4 pens).
- The Philippines are aiming to reach the knockout stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in their debut campaign.
- Sarina Bolden made history against New Zealand when she became the first player to score goal in the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the Philippines.
THE PREDICTION
Like most major tournaments, in both the men’s and the women’s game, the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup has been a low-scoring one. Norway, for example, despite being one of the world’s best sides just a few years ago, are yet to score and are facing back-to-back tournament group stage eliminations. The Philippines’ tactical plan will be to limit and frustrate an already frustrated Norwegian side but Norway should be backed to get things right at least once.
TIP: NORWAY TO WIN
