THE LOWDOWN

NEW ZEALAND

  • The New Zealand Women’s national side not only won the hearts of the nation, but of the footballing world after they put in a wonderful battling performance to stun Norway on the opening night of the tournament, winning 1-0 through a Hannah Wilkinson goal just after half-time, defending valiantly right up to the final whistle, which was greeted with elation from the packed home crowd at Eden Park.
  • The key for New Zealand is now to reset and refocus with knockout qualification now well within their grasp, but when taking into account the momentum and confidence gained from that victory, expect all the Football Ferns to be ready to go again.

PHILIPPINES

  • Philippines put up a good fight against Switzerland in their first match of the tournament, holding them until the stroke of half-time when a somewhat controversial penalty was awarded against them, giving Switzerland the chance to break through and from then there was no way back for Philippines, who at least kept their dominant opponents to just two goals.
  • They will hope for more opportunities here from an attacking point of view and it would be no surprise if Chandler McDaniel is afforded a starting birth in a bid to try and provide more of a cutting edge.

THE KEY STATS

  • Against Norway, New Zealand kept clean sheet in a FIFA Women’s World Cup match for the second time. The previous occasion was a 0-0 draw against Canada in 2015.
  • New Zealand’s record against AFC nations at the FIFA Women’s World Cup is (D1 L3).
  • Hannah Wilkinson’s goal against Norway means she has now scored in three different FIFA Women's World Cups (2011, 2015 and 2023).
  • Against Norway, Hannah Wilkinson became the oldest goalscorer for New Zealand in FIFA Women's World Cup history at 31 years and 53 days. Kim Nye was previously the oldest at 30 years and 195 days against China PR in 1991. Wilkinson also holds the record for being the youngest scorer (19y 38d) v. Mexico (05/07/2011).
  • Ria Percival and Ali Riley jointly hold the record for most FIFA Women’s World Cup appearances for New Zealand, they both made their 13th appearance against Norway.
  • Against Switzerland, Isabella Flanigan became the youngest player to play for the Philippines in the FIFA Women’s World Cup at the age of 18 years and 149 days.
  • Sarina Bolden scored for the Philippines in their only previous match against New Zealand in September 2022.

THE PREDICTION

New Zealand will be seen by many as big favourites to triumph for a second consecutive group game having beaten tougher opposition on paper in Norway. But anyone who watch Philippines against Switzerland know that they are not a team to be written off. They could have taken the lead vs the Swiss if not for a disallowed goal and it took a VAR adjudged penalty for their opponents to finally get through them. Don’t be surprised if New Zealand find it equally as hard to break them down and goals could prove hard to come by. Therefore, consider backing under 2.5 goals scored across 90 minutes.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
