THE LOWDOWN

GERMANY

  • After losing in the final of the UEFA European Championships against England last summer, Germany headed into this FIFA Women’s World Cup as one of the pre-tournament favourites and they started in emphatic fashion.
  • Under the management of Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, Germany are currently ranked second and come into this on the back of a 6-0 hammering of Morocco in their opening match. Star forward, Alexandra Popp, scored a brace in that match.

COLOMBIA

  • Colombia are playing at their third ever FIFA Women’s World Cup but only reached the knockouts in one of their previous two appearances. However, despite being in such a tough group, they have a major opportunity to reach the Round of 16 again.
  • They began their group stage campaign with an impressive 2-0 win against South Korea with Catalina Usme and Linda Caicedo notching first-half goals for the Colombians.

THE PREDICTION

Both of these sides will expect to get through to the knockout stages but one in particular are likely to challenge for the title, alongside the likes of the United States, Spain and England. Germany looked extremely impressive in their hammering of the Moroccans the other day and, whilst Colombia pulled off a bit of a surprise result against South Korea, Germany are the firm favourites for this one.
