THE LOWDOWN

COLOMBIA

  • Copa America finalists Colombia showed their potential in the tournament with a large home crowd roaring them on and a positive result in their opening group fixture will feel very much achievable here.
  • 18-year-old Linda Caicedo of Real Madrid is likely to play an important role in this Women’s World Cup, as will Colombia’s all-time leading goalscorer Catalina Usme, who should play behind Mayra Ramirez in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

SOUTH KOREA

  • South Korea are competing in their third consecutive Women’s World Cup and fourth overall, but they’ve only made it out of the group stage once before back in 2015 and this is a record that they’ll be desperate to improve upon here.
  • They showed their undoubted potential across the Women’s Asian Cup last year, a competition in which they reached the final, booking their place in Australia and New Zealand in the process and with the likes of Ji So-un among their ranks, they have reason to be optimistic.

THE KEY STATS

  • Colombia’s appearance at Australia & New Zealand 2023 means they have qualified for three out of four Women’s World Cups since making their final tournament debut in 2011.
  • Colombia’s last participation at the finals in 2015 was a memorable one, as they recorded their first ever win in a FIFA Women’s World Cup™ match when they defeated France – who were ranked number three in the FIFA rankings at the time – 2-0 in the group stage and then also qualified for the knockout phase for the first time where they eventually lost 2-0 to the USA in the round of 16.
  • This is Colombia’s second Women’s World Cup match against a nation representing the AFC. The previous one was a 0-0 draw against Korea DPR in the 2011 group stage.
  • Lady Andrade will be aiming to score in a third successive Women’s World Cup group match having found the net against both France and England in Colombia’s last two fixtures of the 2015 group stage.
  • South Korea have advanced from the group stage once at the finals. This was in 2015 when they exited in the round of 16 with a 3-0 defeat against France.
  • A 2-1 victory against Spain in the 2015 group stage is South Korea’s only win in their previous ten FIFA Women’s World Cup™ matches (D1 L8).
  • South Korea have lost their opening match without scoring a goal in each of their previous three Women’s World Cup appearances.
  • South Korea have not kept a clean sheet in their previous ten FIFA Women’s World Cup™ matches.

THE PREDICTION

South Korea’s don’t have a particularly good recent Women’s World Cup record in terms of results and a physical, streetwise Colombian unit pose a formidable challenge for them here. Nelson Abadia’s side will look to impose themselves upon their opponents, most likely doubling up on influential midfielder Ji So-yun and shutting down South Korea’s attempts to force their own style of play on this contest. Whilst Colombia have had issues in front of goal in the past, they are expected to have enough going forward to get the better of South Korea, extending their poor run when it comes to opening group stage fixtures at the Women’s World Cup.

TIP: COLOMBIA TO WIN
