THE LOWDOWN

CHINA

  • China’s quest to reach the FIFA Women’s World Cup knockout stage for an eighth time got off to a bad start as they fell to defeat late on at the hands of Denmark and they come into this one having never lost consecutive group games in the history of the tournament.
  • After being brought off the bench at half time against Denmark, the expectation is that Racing Louisville’s Wang Shuang will be given a starting birth this time round and her experience going forward will no doubt be vital with China needing to gain three points in Adelaide.

HAITI

  • Much was spoken pre-match about the cohesiveness and chemistry within this Haitian squad and that was on full display against England, Haiti putting up an excellent fight vs the European champions, defending doggedly, playing with discipline and only losing by a goal to nil due to a retaken penalty.
  • Head coach Nicolas Delepine can take plenty of positives from the game, but suffered a huge blow with the news that he will be without centre-back Jennyfer Limage for the rest of the tournament, the defender having been stretched off with an ACL injury.

THE KEY STATS

  • This is only the third time that China PR have faced Concacaf opposition in the FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage (D 3-3 v. USA in 1995 and L 1-0 v. Canada in 2015).
  • China PR have bounced back from an opening match defeat with a 1-0 victory in their second fixture in each of the last two editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
  • Eight of China PR’s last 11 FIFA Women’s World Cup matches have finished with a 1-0 scoreline.
  • China PR have failed to score in five of their last six FIFA Women’s World Cup matches.
  • FIFA Women’s World Cup debutants Haiti have the youngest squad in the 2023 finals with an average age of 22.3 (at the start of the tournament). They had four teenagers in their starting XI in their opening match against England.
  • In total, Haiti have six teenagers in their squad for this tournament, this is the most of any nation and is five more than China PR who have only one.

THE PREDICTION

From a defensive perspective, Haiti were fantastic against England, disciplined and well set-up off the ball, desperately difficult to break down and could even have scored themselves, creating one huge chance in particular in the final ten minutes that was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Mary Earps. If Haiti can replicate that showing against China, then they have a huge chance of gaining at least a point if not all three. China lacked ideas offensively vs Denmark and their players may be lacking in confidence. However, they themselves won’t be easy to break down and whilst this encounter could go either way, backing under 2.5 goals scored has to be favoured.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
