THE LOWDOWN
CANADA
- Canada’s first game in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup was one of frustration, failing to break down Nigeria and ultimately being forced to settle for a 0-0 draw which leaves them second-place in Group B behind Australia.
- It was certainly a match to forget for Canadian legend Christine Sinclair, who missed the opportunity to score in a record sixth FIFA Women’s World Cup when she had a penalty saved by Chiamaka Nnadozie.
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND
- It took a second half penalty for Australia to get the better of Republic of Ireland this past Thursday, the latter impressing from a defensive perspective with their resilience and work ethic, but having gained no points Vera Pauw’s side are now under pressure going into this one.
- After having been an injury doubt coming into the tournament, Pauw will have been very happy to see midfielder Denise O’Sullivan complete 90 minutes for the ‘Girls in Green’, but she’ll have a tough decision to make regarding whether or not to change any personnel among the frontline.

THE PREDICTION
Canada lacked bite and potency against Nigeria and a similar performance against Republic of Ireland will see them fail to prosper going forward once again, when taking into account how solid their opponents looked against Australia. Republic of Ireland are known for their defensive stability under Pauw, but they themselves looked short of ideas in-front of goal in the opening round and won’t want to commit too many bodies forward here at the risk of being caught at the other end. With so much at stake, a cagey, nervous affair is likely and backing under 2.5 goals scored looks a shrewd move.
TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
