THE LOWDOWN
BRAZIL
- A country of Brazil’s footballing stature have certainly under-achieved at the Women’s World Cup, never winning the competition and most recently being eliminated in the Round of 16 in each of the last two tournaments, but they arrive in far better shape than four years ago and optimism is high within their camp.
- The legendary Marta, will be featuring in her final Women’s World Cup, a competition in which no player has scored more goals and Brazil will no doubt be desperate to send her off in the best possible way, the 37-year-old having represented her country with distinction since 2002.
PANAMA
- Panama are making history here, part of the Women’s World Cup for the first time in their history following victory over Papua New Guinea and then Paraguay in the Play-Offs earlier this year.
- The core of Panama’s side is fairly settled with midfielder Marta Cox pulling the strings, whilst Deysire Salazar and Riley Tanner could well be competing for one place in attack, should head coach Ignacio Quintana opt for a 5-4-1 formation.

THE KEY STATS
- Brazil have successfully qualified for the knockout phase in each of the last six editions of this tournament.
- Brazil have only lost one of their last 18 Women’s World Cup group matches (W15 D2).
- Brazil have not failed to score in their last 21 FIFA Women's World Cup™ group stage matches.
- Brazil have kept 11 clean sheets in their last 12 FIFA Women's World Cup™ group stage matches.
- Brazilian legend Marta is the all-time leading scorer in FIFA Women's World Cup™ history with 17 goals, remarkably finding the net at five successive editions between 2003 and 2019. She scored her first Women’s World Cup goal at the age of 17 years and 214 days against Korea Republic in 2003 and is Brazil’s youngest goalscorer in the competition.
- Panama have qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ for the first time in their history emulating the achievement of the senior men’s team who participated at Russia 2018.
- Their spot at the 2023 finals was earned via a narrow win over Paraguay in the Group C Play-off Tournament final with Lineth Cedeno heading home the only goal of a tight, hard-fought encounter. In the semi-finals they overcame Papua New Guinea 2-0 courtesy of a pair of outstanding goals from Marta Cox and Riley Tanner. Cox scored from an overhead kick and Tanner found the net after a stunning solo run.
THE PREDICTION
Brazil are rightly overwhelming favourites to get off to a good start in the group with them likely to deploy a highly offensive style of play and create many chances against Panama. When you take into account the quality of players within the Brazilian squad, from both an individual and team perspective, they are a superior side and that should be reflected over the course of this game. Therefore, back Brazil to come out on top over Panama by at least two clear goals.
