THE LOWDOWN

AUSTRALIA

  • With their tournament hopes on the line and the hopes of a nation resting on their shoulders, the Australian players rose to the challenge in their final group fixture against Canada, putting in a magnificent all-round performance to triumph 0-4, reaching the knockout stage for a fifth consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cup.
  • There was a further positive for the Matildas with the availability of star striker Sam Kerr from the bench and whilst she wasn’t needed to come on, there must be a strong chance of her lining up from the start now we’ve reached the business end of the tournament.

DENMARK

  • Denmark were expected to qualify from Group D as runners-up to England and that’s exactly what occurred following victories over China and Haiti respectively, Lars Sondergaard’s side conceding just once over the course of the group stage.
  • Sondergaard will likely need to find a way to improve the cutting edge of this Danish team from an offensive perspective if they are to advance further with them having scored only three goals from three games, one of those coming from the penalty spot.

THE KEY STATS

  • Denmark have the edge in the head-to-head record between these two nations with three wins to Australia’s one. The pair have also drawn on two occasions.
  • This is only their second FIFA Women’s World Cup encounter following Denmark’s 5-0 victory in the 1995 group stage.
  • Australia have won four and drawn one of their last six FIFA Women’s World Cup matches (W4 D1 L1).
  • Australia have only failed to score in three of their previous 29 FIFA Women’s World Cup matches.
  • Australia have only failed to score in one of their previous ten FIFA Women’s World Cup matches against European opposition. The sole occasion was their 5-0 defeat against Denmark in 1995.
  • Denmark are yet to win a knockout round tie in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Their previous ties were a 2-1 defeat (aet) against Germany in the quarter-finals in 1991 and a 3-1 defeat against Norway at the same stage of the competition in 1995.
  • Denmark are aiming to win successive FIFA Women’s World Cup matches for the first time.
  • Denmark have kept two clean sheets in three matches at the 2023 finals. They only had three clean sheets in their 14 FIFA Women's World Cup matches prior to this edition.

THE PREDICTION

Momentum is on Australia’s side following that resounding win over Canada, thrilling the home crowd and drawing a firm line under their 2-3 defeat at the hands of Nigeria. Australia’s attacking class cannot be called into question with five goals across their last two games and with Kerr waiting to be thrown into the mix, it’s hard to see Denmark being able to keep their opponents out in this contest. However, Sondergaard’s side know that the Australian backline can be exposed as Nigeria showed in Brisbane and with Pernille Harder among their ranks, you’d expect them carve out a number of chances. Regardless of who comes out on top between these two nations, backing both teams to score in 90 minutes appears the shrewd play.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
