THE LOWDOWN

NETHERLANDS

  • Netherlands had to settle for a point from their clash with Ecuador but a win here will guarantee them safe passage into the knockout stages and it would be a huge shock if they failed to qualify from this point.
  • The Dutch came up against a solid outfit in the Ecuadorians but this is a much easier task against the pointless hosts and with competition for places hotting up, Louis van Gaal may opt to retain Jurrien Timber over Matthijs de Ligt with the latter just one booking away from a ban.

QATAR

  • Qatar became the first team to be eliminated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup after their loss to Senegal in their second group game, confirming that they will be the worst performing hosts in the 92-year history of the tournament.
  • No other host nation has been eliminated after just two matches and now they will aim to avoid the ignominy of becoming the first hosts to crash out without securing a single point but they have few options to improve their side and it is unlikely that they will make too many changes in their quest to claim at least a point.

THE PREDICTION

Netherlands can secure top spot in Group A by defeating hosts Qatar and Ecuador fail to beat Senegal by a bigger margin. That should be a fairly straightforward task for the Dutch with Qatar yet to win a point in either of their two games to date. The hosts have set some unwanted records already and another could be on the cards here with the Dutch likely to be far too classy for them. Louis van Gaal’s side have plenty of improving to do if they are to go deep in this tournament but this game represents a great chance for them to build some attacking synergy and they should be able to run out comfortable victors in this one.

TIP: NETHERLANDS TO WIN WITH -2 HANDICAP
