THE KEY STATS

  • Spain have won each of their last six U21 EURO semi-final matches. Their last defeat at this stage of the tournament was against Portugal in 1994 (L 2-0). Portugal are in fact the only team to have eliminated Spain in the semi-finals
  • Spain successfully progressed through to the final from eight of their previous nine U21 EURO semi-final ties
  • Spain defeated Portugal 3-1 when the two nations last met at the U21 finals in 2017 (group stage)
  • Spain have won 16 and drawn two of their last 18 U21 EURO matches (includes qualifying). Their last defeat was on MD1 at the 2019 finals vs Italy (L 3-1)
  • Spain have won 14 of their last 16 EURO final knockout phase round matches
  • Spain have won 21 of their last 25 EURO final tournament matches
  • Spain have only failed to score in one of their last 16 EURO final knockout phase round matches
  • Spain have scored three or more goals in each of their last four U21 EURO semi-final matches
  • Spain have not conceded more than one goal in any of their last 18 U21 EURO matches (includes qualifying). The last time they conceded more than once in such a game was at the 2019 finals vs Italy (L 3-1)
  • None of Spain’s previous seven goals in the 2021 final tournament have been scored in the first half
  • Portugal have won two of their previous three U21 EURO semi-final matches. This includes a 2-0 win against Spain in the 1994 semi-finals. They defeated Germany 5-0 when they last featured in the semi-finals in 2015
  • Portugal have won 17 of their last 19 U21 EURO matches (includes qualifying). This includes each of the last 11
  • Portugal have lost only one of their last 13 U21 EURO final tournament matches (W9 D3 L1) – their only defeat in this period was against Spain in the 2017 group stage (L 3-1)
  • Portugal have scored three goals or more in seven of their last 11 U21 EURO matches (includes qualifying)
  • Portugal have scored inside of the opening ten minutes in seven of their last 11 U21 EURO matches

THE PREDICTION

An extra-time victory against Croatia in the quarter-final will be a huge relief for a Spanish team that had dominated the majority of the match but conceded a 94th minute penalty to be denied inside the normal 90 minutes. A brace for substitute Javi Puado could mean he gets a starting berth ahead of Villarreal forward Fer Nino who ended his La Liga season in good form. They are coming up against a Portugal team that enjoyed their own extra-time win in a thrilling 5-3 match against Italy in which Dani Mota scored a wonder goal in his brace. The Portuguese will also be relieved after they had led 2-0 and 3-1 before the Italians fought back. A red card for Matteo Lovato (incredibly, Italy’s sixth of the tournament in four matches) in the first minute of extra time gave Portugal their advantage to kick on. Both sides had 18 shots in their 120 minutes of play so will both fancy a goal for themselves as well; although, it will be an even contest.
