  • Hungary have scored at least one first half goal in eight of their last ten competitive home games

  • Germany have not conceded more than one goal in any of their last eight U21 EURO final tournament group stage matches
  • Germany have only kept one clean sheet in their last ten U21 EURO final tournament matches
  • Lukas Nmecha scored in each of Germany’s last five matches in their successful qualifying campaign. He scored six goals across those five games

THE PREDICTION

Hungary begin their first U21 Euros since 1996 and they are only their due to bye as hosts. Their recent results are almost an explanation for that poor qualification record with the key stats showing their poor form. Their squad is inexperienced, even for U21 level, with no full internationals and not many having broken into their club’s first team. They come against a German side who are always one of the U21 favourites. As mentioned, Anderlecht’s on-loan Manchester City forward Lukas Nmecha should be someone to look out for but the supporting cast is also excellent. One of the most exciting prospects in world football, potentially the most exciting, is the 16 year-old Youssoufa Moukoko of Borussia Dortmund. It isn’t as vintage as previous Germany U21 squads have been but it still boasts Champions League experience as well as lots of first-team appearances at club level. This should be a German victory.
