Plenty of popular FPL assets brought home a healthy number of points for their respective ownerships in Gameweek 5, including a number that were considered viable captaincy candidates. However, Liverpool’s Mo Salah (£12.8m) you could argue, wasn’t one of those assets after gaining 6 fantasy points against Bournemouth. Captainers would’ve no doubt been hoping for more than just the solitary assist from the Egyptian in that one.
Meanwhile, the rest of our recommended captain picks for last weekend all got on the scoresheet, including Ollie Watkins (£9.0m), Cole Palmer (£10.6m) and differential pick Jhon Duran (£6.1m), who once again came off the bench to score for Aston Villa, this time against Wolves. Of the three, it was Palmer who top-scored, bringing home 8 FPL points.
Now it’s time to move on and focus on the upcoming round of Premier League fixtures and on which players represent the most attractive captain options for FPL managers, alongside a potential differential choice ahead of Saturday’s 11:00am deadline.
PREMIUM OPTIONS
Erling Haaland (£15.3m) vs NEW (a)
It’s now 100 goals in all competitions for Erling Haaland at Man City, with 73 of those coming in the Premier League following his cool finish against Arsenal in Gameweek 5. It doesn’t matter who the Norwegian faces at present, he’s capable of hauling big on any given gameweek. Ten goals and 63 FPL points across five league matches so far in 2024-25 paints a big picture as to Haaland’s consistent fantasy output.
Man City travel to Newcastle in Gameweek 6, never an easy fixture. However, the Magpies have not kept a clean sheet in the Premier League this season since Gameweek 1 and in current form, Haaland will be expected to add substantially not only to his goal tally, but also to what is an already large collection of fantasy points.
Bukayo Saka (£10.0m) vs LEI (H)
Expect Arsenal assets to prove extremely popular in Gameweek 6 with struggling Leicester their opponents at Emirates Stadium and Bukayo Saka immediately comes to mind as a potential skipper. Saka has yet to finish a Premier League fixture this season without recording at least one attacking return and is currently on an active streak of five assists in as many league games.
On paper, the struggling Foxes stand out as one of the easier fixtures that Arsenal could have been afforded in Gameweek 6 and Saka will expect far more of the ball compared to what he saw this past Sunday in the Gunners’ 2-2 draw with Man City. When also considering his command of Arsenal penalties, this only further encourages FPL managers to captain him.
Luis Diaz (£7.9m) vs WOL (a)
Forget Salah, Luis Diaz is proving to be the Liverpool midfield asset who should take the focus when it comes to choosing a Gameweek 6 captain. A second brace of the campaign last time out against Bournemouth means it’s now five Premier League goals scored already by the Colombian in 2024-25. You can add to that an assist and three double-figure fantasy scores across the last five gameweeks.
Despite his minutes potentially being managed, Diaz has to now be seen as a very live pick for the armband, especially with his ownership having now exceeded the 30% mark. Away this coming weekend to a Wolves side who have the joint-worst defensive record in the Premier League, the shouts for Diaz grow louder.
DIFFERENTIAL OPTION
Chris Wood (£6.1m) vs FUL (H)
No, we haven’t gone back in a time machine, Chris Wood is not still banging goals in at Burnley under Sean Dyche. He’s actually now banging in goals at Nottingham Forest and showing that he still offers huge FPL value, particularly when you take into account that his ownership remains well under 10% at the time of writing.
Wood’s penalty last time out vs Brighton was his third league goal of the season and 8 fantasy points takes him to an overall score of 29 points, the fourth most among forwards heading into Gameweek 6, which sees Nuno Espirito Santo’s side host Fulham. Those FPL managers that want a different captain to try and catch their respective mini-league rivals should weigh up possibly taking a gamble on Wood as captain.
